We know what's going on now.
Here's how you can fix it for yourself - we will need to fix it permanently in a future version of the software, though.
Open the Zune software - sign in

This is definitely our issue that we need to solve with a new software release. However, here is a workaround that we believe will resolve the issue:
Open the Zune software - sign in
Do NOT go to any social pages!
Leave the Zune software running for four hours
Close the software, then re-open and sign in again - we believe your friends will ...

You can search for "Seattle" or other location names in the search box in the upper right, but it will only return results if users have explicitly set their location - we don't use their ZIP code, so it's really only if someone has said they're somewhere in particular.

Yes, that is why; even though in the software those discs are related to the artist, they need to be in our catalog (catalog = all the artist/album pages on zune.net, plus everything sold in the Zune Marketplace) in order to count.

We made the deliberate decision to use messaging/email to send songs from one person to another on the device; the old feature was not commonly used and we felt the messaging/email would be more useful for more people.

There's something preventing the list from getting updated in the software...I just asked that team if they know what it is yet, but it's interesting that seemingly randomly the friends list updates. The way this works in particular is that my team creates the API (basically, the list) of friends that the software needs to show; the software team ...

So, I can tell you for sure there was no change on the web site; I can imagine something not loading correctly or something not working, but it wasn't like we released something then took it down - the web site has been the same since...I forgot the last day we made a change, but it was more than a few weeks ago.
Do let me know if you see it ...

Okay - so to help us diagnose the problem, if you could reply here with the following information:
-- What is the first badge you got notified about more than once?
-- When did you last receive the repeated notification for that badge?
thanks - our team is looking into it.

No, what's happening is that the web site knows how to retrieve the text of the artist name (and it's a separate bug that there's even a broken link; there shouldn't be a link at all). The software doesn't know how to get a non-catalog artist name, so it displays as unknown. But really, your content isn't linked properly to that artist at all.

Couple of things.
The email address you use to log in with is like a username; even if you don't use that email address any longer, you can still use it to log in with.
But if you really want to change it, you will need to do it through accounts.live.com - Zune doesn't have a way to change email addresses just for Zune.

That should only happen if you attempt to use the same email address (Live ID) to create a new account; when you sign in, you should be able to use the Live ID.
You also might try "recover gamertag" if that really isn't working.
There's no way to close a zune account, but you can shut down the entire Live ID at accounts.live.com.
