Who is the most influential Jazz Artist After Miles Davis?

My pick is Ornette Coleman

I know I'm skipping some heavyweights but Coleman influences so many of my favorite artists from Tortoise to John Zorn.

OK so I was out [roller] skating this evening and the DJ played a track that had this funky/hip-hop/jazzy sound to it. No lyrics so nothing to go off of there. When I asked him about it he said it was by the J.B.'s, but the only J.B.'s I could think of is the James Brown J.B.'s. Now Like I said no words, but what it does have is a large strings part (sounded like Cello) and horns (Sax, trumpet). It is an awesome grove and I really don't want to have to wait till next Sunday to hear it again. I know that it is not much to go off of but any help would be greatly appreciated.
It's a song I use to hear most of the time on the Jazz stations years back...it's a guy singing and I think it's the chorus where he says "Sarah" a bunch of times. LoL I know that's not much info but it's all I remember anyone who thinks they know reply or send it to me. Thanks :D.
[information comes via Inside the Circle] :-)

I literally just discovered this today and thought I
would share. Verve Music Group, of which the jazz division has
showcased some of the great minds of jazz music has been releasing
out-of-print albums for digital purchase and download. It's a chance
for avid collectors of jazz music to find those rare records they
probably couldn't locate in the vintage record store. I,
myself, am very excited to have discovered that this was going on. I
guess I'll spend part of my morning, tomorrow, picking up some of these
rare treasures.
If you want to browse through their out-of-print (now digitally available) catalog, click here.

I just wanted to let all of you jazz listeners know that over at Inside the Circle, I've begun a Jazz 101 series. It's not meant to be any kind of definitive look at jazz, but it's more so an introduction to different aspects of jazz music and jazz history. Also, because we're in the throws of Black History Month, a blog such as ours wasn't going to let the month go by without showcasing one of the great accomplishments and contributions of African-Americans.

I encourage you guys to read through the posts, ask questions , offer feedback and contribute additional information (there are things that I would like to learn from you, as well). I wouldn't mind it in the least if the series became ultimately a collaborative effort between the knowledge that I share and the knowledge that you share.

To read through the series, without having to weed through any of our other postings, click here.
Mairead Nesbitt has an album called "Raining Up" she is an Irish Fiddle player. It's kind of a funny combination it's like...Jazz with the Irish Fiddle and a hint of Australlia(if that makes any sense) you have to listen to it it's BRILLIANT! "Bluelights" is my favourite song. It's kind of hard to explain just try it.

I asked the Folk folks this as well, but they haven't seen fit to read, let alone answer the question.

The system has her categorized as Rock, which is one category she truly does not fit in.

What do you think? Is she a Jazz singer, or more on the Folksy side?

Her debut album "Come Away with Me" got Norah 5 Grammies and a lifetime of Jazz respect. I'm a big fan of her style. I remember when my mom used to play Norah Jones on those lazy evenings. Her mellow voice and wistful dreaming lyrics send me into a slow daze.

I love Norah Jones.

one of the things i'm so liking about my zune is the surprises you find cycling through my music collection! the other day i'm listening to my jazz vocals when just another parade from cassandra wilson's belly of the sun begins to play. until then i had never realized the song was, in fact, a duet. i did recognize her singing partner as being india.arie though this was not picked up via the zune marketplace and there's only scant mention of this in the board's review.

any possibility this info could be updated? i think fans of both might find this particular performance interesting.

Hey all,

I'm into most all types of music from country & rock to hip-hop & big band. I'm not very particular in any certain genre, but i've recently been listening to, and putting a lot of my old jazz cds on my zune. I'm listening to a lot of variety from big band Frank Sinatra to Ella to Buddy Rich, and i'm a neat freak when it comes to organization with the categories on my zune, i don't like everything to just be jumbled up. But here lies my question: How and how do you distingish different types of Jazz? Is Big Band in fact Jazz? How about Swing? Vocalist? Pianist? et al. It seems like so far with looking the albums up on the zune network, that it automatically categorizes anyone with a intstrument, whether it be, trombone, trumpt, drums, piano, guitar (like herbie hancock, miles davis, buddy rich, john coltrane, Thelonious Monk etc.) as "Jazz", and anyone who doesn't play an instrument (Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Buble, Nat King Cole, etc.) as "Vocal". I was wondering if anyone categorized any differently than this or maybe a better way to categorize the genre.

Also all musicians i have thus far if they are instrumental are in "Jazz", and non-instrumental are in "Vocal". . . except Norah Jones. She for some reason is in Jazz. Don't quite understand that one being that the rest of the singers were under "Vocal". But, any sort of comment on organization would be helpful.

I know i'm mainly rambling on about nothing, and it's not really a big deal. I was just interested in maybe what some of you think that are particular about categorizing genres.

I fell in love with a group called the Seatbelts. They are a Jazz-ish band from Japan. Since then, I have been interested in Jazz and some blues. I've been looking for a group or artist with a similar feel ever since. I prefer to be able to download direct from Zune but I'm up for a little CD hunting if necessary. I appreciate any help!

Does anyone have some good recommendations for some latin jazz. I love the style, but all I have is The Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Ismael Rivera. They are both great especially since the sun has been out more. Great hot summer day music.

Hey,

Im not all that into jazz so I dont know any specifit artists but I am currently trying to learn to play jazz guitar (instead of the usual rock i play) and I was wondering what some good artists to listen to are. I need something thats focused on jazz guitar and not other instruments so I can listen to it and learn to play some of the songs.

Thanks,

I'm curious who others find to be their favorite jazz bassist, as I've been developing my opinions over six or seven years. After all this time, I still can't narrow myself down to just one; I'm going to have to say that for me it's an even split between Mingus and Jaco. They're both such phenomenal players, plus they both excelled at composing pieces. If you want to get picky about it, I suppose we could list favorite acoustic bassist and electric bassist, in which case I'm alright. Opinions?
I was listening Napster's "Jazz Today" radio station, not paying much attention, when something truly strange but very fresh wormed its way into my ear and I had to stop and find out what it was. Turns out it was a song called The Real Morning Party by Marco Benevento. You guys heard of him? I never had. I downloaded the album "Invisible Baby" from Napster and it's a very interesting listen. Some of it is recognizable as jazz. But there is a very experimental mix with pop, rock, and electronic music. Some of it seems to be inspired by old video game music. A great album for when you are feeling musically bored and think you've heard it all before.

Mar 3, 8:59 AM (ET)

(AP) Canadian blues guitarist Jeff Healey and his band perform in New York's Central Park, in this July...
Full Image

TORONTO (AP) - Blind rock and jazz musician Jeff Healey has died after a lifelong battle against cancer. He was 41.

Healey died Sunday evening in a Toronto hospital, said bandmate Colin Bray, who was in the room with Healey's family when the guitarist died.

The Grammy-nominated Healey rose to stardom as the leader of the Jeff Healey Band, a rock-oriented trio that gained international acclaim and platinum record sales with the 1988 album "See the Light." The album included the hit single "Angel Eyes."

Healey had battled cancer since age 1, when a rare form of retinal cancer known as Retinoblastoma claimed his eyesight.

Due to his blindness, Healey taught himself to play guitar by laying the instrument across his lap.

His unique playing style, combined with his blues-oriented vocals, earned him a reputation as a teenage musical prodigy. He shared stages with George Harrison, B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Bray said he and many others expected the guitarist to rally from this latest illness.

"I don't think any of us thought this was going to happen," Bray said. "We just thought he was going to bounce back as he always does."

Healey had undergone numerous operations in recent years to remove tumors from his lungs and leg.

Bray and fellow bandmate Gary Scriven remembered their frontman as a musician of rare abilities with a generous nature and wicked sense of humor.

Healey's true love was jazz, the genre that dominated his three most recent albums.

His love of jazz led him to host radio shows in Canada where he spun long-forgotten numbers from his personal collection of over 30,000 vinyl records.

His death came weeks before the release of his first rock album in eight years.

"Mess of Blues" is slated for a North American release on April 22.

He is survived by his wife, Christie, and two children.
