Here's something interesting that I've heard a lot. That the 4th wave of ska is gonna be...get this...emo-ska... I'm not sure how that works...but sadly I wouldn't doubt it... Hmm maybe that's why the 4th wave isn't coming...

Ska: With or Without Horns

Theres ska bands out there with and without horns. Both are amazing.

But in your opinion which do you prefer?

For me: I go both ways. Bands like Op IVy and Common Rider and Suicide Machines are really good without horns. But at the same time Big D and Streetlight Manifestos amazingly well written and performed horns are ridiculously good.

What ska bands have you seen in person?

The Toasters passed through the Cincinnati area a couple months ago, and I completely missed out on it due to a business trip. I got to thinking recently, how many ska bands I've seen in concert, in the past 12 or so years I've been pretty heavily into ska. Was gonna write them down, but I figured I might as well post them here, even though some of you rudies have probably been 10x the ska shows I've seen.

So here goes, in no particular order:

The Toasters (4-5 times)
Reel Big Fish (5 times)
The Specials (twice, including a special private recording session at Y100 in Philadelphia-- I think I stepped on Neville Staples's feet a couple times trying to dance in the cramped space)
Bosstones (just once, during the '97 or '98 Warped Tour)
The Pietasters
Otis Reem
Mustard Plug
Skankin' Pickle
MU330
Regatta 69
The Scatologists (local Delaware band)
Public Service (local Philly band)

Plus probably several others I can't think of at the moment. Cincinnati is a black hole as far as local ska goes, but there is one local band I recently discovered, that I need to get out & see.

Lets see if I can get a ska thread a going. Lets name some of our faviortie ska bands and shows we've been too.

For some good traditional ska would be Desmond Decker, Toots and Matyls, Prince Buster, Don Drummond, and Jackie Mitto.
For 2tone I recommend the Specials, The Toasters, The (English) Beat, Bad Manners, Fishbone and Madness.
For 3rd wave I'd go with Mighty Mighty BossTones, Reel Big Fish, Choking Victim, Operation Ivy, and Suicide Machines.
There is so much more but I'll give you all a go.

Wtf! I didn't expect this one! Elley wit Diddy?! Only good thing I see out of this, is a few good remixes. Puff dosen't have a good track record with his artists. Let's see Eightball & MJG, FuzzBubble(remember them), The white kid he signed(Think MTV Rhyme Battle), Mark Curry, and a host of others. So many Q's now, like is this the end of him killin riddim albums? What kind of music he gon put out? Is Diddy gon be all over the damn track wit his trademark "BadBoy, Yeah, C'mon!" and "Take that Take that Take that!"? Man I need a spliff.

Riddim Galore!

Im loving the ability to lock down most of the hottest riddims around. I give Zune a B- for its riddim library, a lot still needed, but it quenches mi thirst fi dancehall fairly well. Anyone in the Zuniverse have any hard to obtain riddims or any that's now unavail in the marketplace?
