I'd like to start a forum on discussing latin music. This could take many angles, but I like to talk about the music and the stories behind the music. In my blog, I posted an article about the Premios Billboard Musica Latina 2009. The subtitle is: "more of the same" because we always see the same winners! In my opinion, these awards, like "Premios Lo Nuestro", Latin Grammy, etc. seem to be focusd on the artist or group popularity instead of the quality of their music. I have a beef with this because it doesn't allow the unknown or unconnected and good artist to shine through his work.

So I think the real reason behind this is a flawed marketing strategy by the music industry to boost sales, which have been in steady decline for the past few years. This post is geeting long, so you can read the full story at my blog (which you can get through my Zune Card).

more shakira stuff

Greetings,

I love listening to music with vocals that aren't in english, I love listening to Shakira (watching her's not bad either). I'm completely unfamilar with the Latin music scene. Anyone point to a few latin artists who I might enjoy, english speaking or not? I followed the "related artists" links that zune offers and was very unimpressed.

i subscribe to Latina magazine and they have a 'best of latin culture' every now and then. the article im talking about here is in their August 2008 issue, if you care to check it out.

looks like they teamed up with Zune to bring one free download from each artist; theres several.

if you have Zune Pass, my recommendation: download the album the song is on. they really do kick ass.

If you're a fan of Rock en Espanol or are interested in Latin music/culture in general, I highly recommend checking out Rock y Roll Radio: a two-hour, weekly show out of Austin, Tejas. Hosts Paul Saucido and Dacia Saenz play a fantastic mix of contemporary Latin music as well as interviews with such artists as Pacha Massive, Maneja Beto, Jessie y Joy, and Gustavo Alberto.

It's for a dance/play type of thing I'm doing and I'd like something to start slow like a tango and then build/explode into more of a club feel. I'm sure I'm missing a ton of great albums, I just don't know where to look :)

Ecuadorian Music

I went to a friends of a friends party and they were playing a lot of ecuadorian music. I don't know what its called, but its not the pipes and flute type(although that is nice too). Most probably it comes from los campos del ecuador. Its danced by alternating 2 steps on each foot and I was told sometimes they twirl a handkerchief tambien, pero nadien en la fiesta lo hizo. Some of the songs were in quechua. Anyone have any ideas and recommendations for groups.
