Listen to "You Got To Unwind" on Triptych by The Bevis Frond. The guitar riff, which you can hear most clearly starting at 0:09 and lasting until he starts singing, reminds me of something and I can't for the life of me figure out what. Not just the tune of it (you can hear that in lots of Byrds-influenced guitar riffs like that in Allison Road by the Gin Blossoms) - but it's the sound that I'm looking for. Some other song that I remember vaguely has a guitar riff that has that same sound effect in it. For reference, I was born in '68 so my formative years were late 70s and early 80s so I suspect that's where it's from. But I listen to a wide variety of stuff so it might be sometime else.

Well, considering as we'll be in 2010 in a short time, I thought this might be a fun thread to make--Album of the Decade!

I don't expect you to narrow it down to a single album, hence the reason it's a top 5. For me, it'd have to be.....

1) Eisenhower by The SLIP
2) Figure 8 by Elliott Smith
3) I'm Wide Awake It's Morning by Bright Eyes
4) Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel by Sleeping in the Aviary
5) Infinity Land by Biffy Clyro

I'm sure there's at least one forehead-slap-worthy album I forgot.

Honorable mention/others that crossed my mind:
-Elephant by The White Stripes
-Carnavas by Silversun Pickups
-From a Basement on the Hill by Elliott Smith (excluded only because I didn't want 2 Elliott albums in there)
-Both Before I'm Gone by Girl in a Coma
-Source Tags and Codes by ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of the Dead
-Into the West by Pilot Speed

What's your tops of the decade?

For me I'm going to have to say Pink Floyd's The Wall. Not only did it get me into Pink Floyd's other albums which I cherish very much, but it also broaden my horizons in terms of musical taste. It made me think of music in a theatrical way for the first time. It also warmed me up to concept albums. While The Wall isn't the best Floyd album I'd have to say that it opened up all kinds of doors for me.

Child, Here Comes the Sun, and A New Day Coming. No matter how bad I have felt, these songs always lift the load. What about you?
I can think of one track that totally chaged my life. If you listen to dance music, then you've probrobly heard of Ferry Corsten. He's went under many different aliases over the years. The track he produced he did under the moniker "System F" and the track was called "Out of the blue". It was October 30th, 1999(my birthday, yea!) and i went to a large rave(at the time the largest texas had ever seen)where MTV and DJ Skribble were hosting. When I say large, I mean over 12,000 people were there. Before this night, I liked dance music but didnt really understand why. The headlinder of the main stage that night was another fantastic DJ/producer Scot Stubbs. When he came out that night, I was sitting in the stands with alot of my friends, rolling really hard on a combonation of good gel acid and ecstacy, feeling good all around being my birthday and all. All at once the lights went down, music still playing off the last Dj's set, and Scot Stubbs did a brilliant drop of System F's(Ferry Corsten)"Out of the blue", which alot of people will tell you defined the 90's trance scene. And apparently the real show started. Lights they hadnt used the entire night came on. Blue, yellow, red lasers were starting to power up, mounted on each of the corners of the centralized stage had what are called "YAG" lasers, a broad spectrum "laser" of sorts that are like huge glow sticks, all moving and swaying in no particular rythym to the music being played. The lights as a whole were coreographed to Scot Stubbs set. It was the first time I realized the power this music style. A huge rush of heat and energy flew threw me at incredible speeds until I felt like I literally would explode if I didnt get my ass down to the dance floor and rock my body till the ground caught fire! It was also the first time I had hit a dancefloor. But it was because of the track and the excellent execution of the atmosphere that chaged my life. PLUR

Hey, folks, first post here.

I've been reading some opinions here as to whether contemporary music is actually good or not. Like many of you, I am of the opinion that most of what's put out these days is awful. Most of what's on my car radio really doesn't do anything for me, and I'd consider myself fairly open musically. I just like really good stuff, and most of what I hear doesn't exactly fill the bill. In understanding why that is, though, I think we have to pull back and look at contemporary culture as a whole.

The fact is, we're all entertainment junkies today. The entertainment industry craps out a massive amount of 'entertainment matter' for our digestion, but it doesn't fill us at all. Because the lust for entertainment is just like any other lust: it multiplies. We want 'more', but the truth is, there isn't always more out there. Music takes talent, and talent's not an infinite resource.

So, to supply the product needed, something else stands in for talent: formula. By imitating the masters of the genre, they're able to give us plenty that resembles the genuine article. Most of us have a foggy idea of what makes good music (not all of us, though... discriminating taste is not an infinite resource either), and have some perception of 'bad music'. Formula can be pretty good at what it does, though, and a lot of people don't quite realize that what they subscribe to taste-wise isn't truly good stuff. There's most of contemporary music right there.

There are other things to blame, like the increasing habit of public education to create templates out of individuals. By conforming long enough to certain molds, talent is actually lost. So is discrimination. How can that be fixed? By pursuing our loves in the music world - not necessarily what we've grown to like through social familiarity. We need to go after what really makes us tick. Dare to get into something that might not have a huge amount of support from the like-minded - explorers find treasure because they leave the beaten path. Learn to recognize what's really effective and powerful (to you) in the music world. Then... take what you've learned and create something.

Oh, and if you really don't think modern music is plagued with rotten apples, don't worry about it. It may be your tastes are just more accepting/less critical than the tastes of others. No problem. Just... please don't make more music like what you're listening to.

- A

Don't try relegating this to just grunge either.

Cause anyone over 30 who payed attention knows there was a cacophony of different bands out there. I've observed that classic rock stations have been trying to slip some bands from this era in. Personally it seems out of place for me, I grew up hearing classic rock & Pearl Jam or Winger don't fit that bill.

I'm split between the 60s and the 80s. The 60s had greats like Jimmi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Bob Marley, The Byrds, The Beatles, and the Byrds all in their prime.

The 80s had a lot of the best hard rock and metal music Slayer, Iron Maiden, Sepultera, Megadeth, Metallica, Bathory and the list goes on. What do you all think?

There's always a point in music when a piece of music becomes an instant classic. Or a piece of music that sticks with you, relates to you in some sort of way. Of all the albums you've bought, or downloaded, what is your greatest album that you have ever listened to?

Qualifications:

-Must be an album that you can easily listen to from front to back (no skipping, no shuffling)

-Any genre of music

-Why do you listen to it?

My favorite album that I've listened to is Metallica's Master of Puppets. There's never been an album that I've listened to that has an atmospheric feel with each song. "Battery" is without a doubt one of the best tracks I've ever listened to to begin the album. The title track is like three songs in one (a pogoing part, a headbanging part, a ballad, come on now). "The Thing That Should Not Be" is like "For Whom the Bell Tolls," it is a crunchy riff song that commands headbanging. "Sanitarium" is one of the best songs I can listen to when it's rainy, the open "Ping" sound sounds like you're entering a dark place, and a kick ass solo to boot. "Disposable Heroes" is the track I listen to the least, but it gives you a war-like feel when hearing the drums pound. "Leper Messiah" became an addicting song for me the first time I heard it, I love the screaming of "LIE" near the end of the song. "Orion" is the perfect song to play when looking at the nightsky, looking at the stars while listening to this song is like freaking cool. "Damage, Inc." is the perfect way to close the album. An "Orion"-like bass solo from Cliff starts if off, then the speed just gets faster.

When I take the long train ride from class to home, it takes me an hour. Listening to this makes the train ride go by faster.

I'm glad my dad raised me on original Metallica. This led me to buying Ride the Lightning, Kill 'em All. Then I discovered Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, but Master of Puppets is when I started to live the metal lifestyle.

Any Cure fans in here? I remember this band got me through those crazy, depressed teenaged years of the early 90's. I've seen them live twice and I can't wait for the new album. Any one else?
They're like tequila stories and mums, everybody's got at least one: that song (or those songs) that you believe are completely kick ass, but which--through no fault of their own--are associated with completely wretched events. Now, despite their total kick-assery, you just don't want to hear'em if you don't have to.

So there you go--have at it!
