Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?

Last night I upgraded to the 2.2 firmware and I've successfully wiped out my Zune 3 times due to the auto sync feature.  In the 1.4 firmware I was able to right click the device and tell it "Do Not Automatically Sync."  Anyone know if this feature is still available?  Thanks

Very good question.

Go to settings>device>sync options

Then set everything to let me choose

@Karl

Thanks for replying but all of my media is already set to "Let Me Choose."

Okay I think I understand. You don't want it to sync until you press "sync now."  I could have sworn I saw that, but I can't find it.

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?

Yes that's correct but let me elaborate with an example.  Right now I'm dealing mainly with video files.  I have the video files (.mp4) in a folder called "ZuneTransfer."  Zunetransfer is my main monitored folder for video files on my hard drive.  All of the files were synced with version 1.4 and then I would copy off the .wmv versions to a folder called "ZuneCategorize" which is a holding ground that I use for editing the metadata tags on my video files.  After all of the metadata tags have been completed I move the original .mp4 files to a generic movies folder and the newly categorized .wmv files are placed back in the ZuneTransfer folder.  At this point I would delete all of the uncategorized video file from the Zune and sync the newly categorized .wmv files.  Once this entire process is complete I move the .wmv files from the ZuneTransfer folder into a folder called ZuneComplete.  This allows the process to continue for future videos while still maintaining my old videos in the event my Zune gets wiped out.

Here is where the issue is.  ZuneComplete is not a monitored folder an I don't want it to be a monitored folder.  After I move all of the files from the ZuneTransfer folder to the ZuneComplete folder all of the files are automagically removed from the Zune.

I hope all this makes sense.  I know it's a convoluted process but the software doesn't allow me to edit the metadata for my videos and the organization is non existant without the metadata.

Can't say I'm not a little confused. :) You could click "forget this device" and then log in as a guest. I think that would achieve some of what you want. But you might find that a highly unsatisfactory solution.

Yeah I don't think I'm going to do that.  I'll give MS a call and see what they say but if that doesn't work I'll just take everything back to version 1.4.  At this point the only improvement for me is that they fixed the artist tag within music videos.  I'd rather keep the files on my Zune verses having the artist name on my music videos.  Thanks for all the responses Karl.

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?

Hi guys.

A few points on the sync functionality as it pertains to the library:

- If a folder is monitored, then if a file in that folder is deleted or moved to a non-monitored folder, it will be removed from the library.  If it's removed from the library and was synced with a device that has a primary sync relationship it will be removed from the device as well.

One thing you might be able to do to avoid this is to add the content to the library but not monitor the folder it's in.  In other words, have c:\foo be some folder containing your videos, and don't add it to the monitored list.  Drag the videos directly from Explorer onto your library, which will add the files, but will not change the monitoring status of the folder.  Now you should be able to sync the video, but if you delete the original files, it's my belief that Zune will ignore that fact and leave the no-longer-existing video item around in your video library, thus allowing it to remain on the device.

Give that a shot and let me know whether that works for you.

Regards,
Andy

This sort of works but what I have left in My Collection is an Icon of the video (no thumbnail picture).
But... how about putting back the old feature :)
How about a new option when you delete a file from the collection.
Something like "Remove file from collection, but keep in Zune"
:)

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?

I'll give this a shot the next time I'm at home, in theory it seems like it should work.  I wasn't aware that I could drag and drop folders so this would really help me out if it works.  Thanks for the reply Gemini.

EDIT: This does not work.  Even with unmonitored folders as soon as you remove files from your collection it removes them from Zune.  Your best bet is to downgrade to 1.4 if you want full control of your Zune back.

The thumbnail will be lost, as the Explorer thumbnail handlers attempt to access the file to build the thumbnail for videos.

I get your point on the sync behavior, but for now, we've optimized the behavior for the audience that wants to keep the library and the content on the device actually in sync, as opposed to treating the device as a completely independent storage medium.

Andy
