re: equalizer
there are no eq's in the new Zunes.  The eq in the old zunes was hardware based and was dropped in favor of wi-fi sync.

re: equalizer

If no EQ in the 80Gb..how is the sound compared to the 30Gb?? Certainly earphones make a difference but lets figure on the Zune Premium Earphones for comparison purposes.

Sounds like an easy fix for the new Zunes...we can wifi sync on the 30GB with EQ function...why can't the 80GB have EQ?

re: equalizer
The official response was that they eliminated the hardware used for the EQ to improve battery life and improve the actual audio signal (one less processor to pass through means a cleaner signal).  It's probably not possible to add an EQ to the v2 Zunes since there's an actual hardware element that's been removed.  I believe it's possible to apply an EQ filter to your files themselves before syncing (using 3rd party software), but I'm not sure how well that's going to actually work.

The loss of an EQ might seem lousy, but the truth is that the Zune's EQ was never great to begin with, and a flat signal is a better representation of the music.  If you get some headphones that match your listening preferences, it's pretty much a non-issue.  People think they need to adjust the EQ to match the music genre, but the truth is that good recording are already mixed that way -- EQs tend to just overemphasize things.

I actually prefer the "Bass Boost" that a lot of CD players have.  The only real fiddling I do with my music's levels is to jack up the bass on certain songs (especially electronica and hiphop) to get a little extra boom.  I wonder if that WOULD be something they could add via firmware.
