Help! Inaccessable content on device.

OK, here goes, it's a bit complicated...

My Zune device (120GB) was being unresponsive/erratic, freezing and glitching.

I connected it to my PC (Windows XP) which told me to download the latest Zune software, which I tried several times but was unsuccessful.

The support site told me to manually install/download (I'm not sure about the verb, sorry) the Zune firmware, which I did.

I don't really know why, but I put it on my G:drive (external hard-drive), then started up the updated 4.0 Zune software from there. I'm pretty sure the original one, which I deleted, was on my C: drive.

So now my Zune device is working OK, but says I have 0 songs, 0 pictures and 0 videos, but also that it is half-full (53.22GB used). The Zune software on my computer tells me that my device is half-full with content from a different computer, and keeps trying to sync the same content, which will completely fill the device.

So basically, I have a Zune device with thousands of songs on it which I can't listen to, and I have no idea what to do.

That's it. Any ideas?

Thanks.

re: Help! Inaccessable content on device.
You've confused the software, which creates and maintains an index file to keep track of all your settings, and your collection.  It's fine to install the software on an external drive, and it's also fine to keep your collection there.  Just be careful-  if you remove and reattach that external drive it may come back with a different drive letter... and nothing will work.  Also, I hope you uninstalled the software from C:\  and not that you deleted it...that also can cause issues.
To fix your current issue:
1) Link your zune to the software (or verify that it is correctly linked) using the software settings.
2) Verify that your monitored folder settings are correct (if you can see your collection in the software, it is correct.)
3) Connect your device and set your sync mode to 'all'  It should recognize the content on the device is the same as that on your PC, and not re-sync it.

But, it's possible that you've really confused it.  You may have to erase and re-sync the zune completely.

Thanks. I think I really confused it. I'm gonna remove the software and re-install it on the C drive and see if that works.

You said,  'You may have to erase and re-sync the zune completely.' Just in case I need to, how do I do that?

You can do it through the Device settings on the software. There should be a Erase All Content under the Sync Groups section.

1) Make sure you have copies of everything on your PC.
2) Zune software->settings->device->sync options-> click the 'erase all content' button.
