Zune HD improvements
Just got a Zune HD and I love it. However, I think there are some improvements that can be made with a firmware update.

1. Volume, pause/play, and FF/RW/Skip NEED to be on the main song screen. I shouldn't have to press a button the bring them up.
2. We should be able to apply a wallpaper to the player like the old Zunes.
3. Delete on the fly, since we can download on the fly it would be good to be able to free up space

Hope this helps!

1)  it is...just touch the screen in an unused area and they come up instantly.  (I prefer this to the button, and I actually don't mind making a touch to activate them as I don't want the screen cluttered when they aren't needed.)
2) I think this might be inconsistent with the twist interface on the HD.  There are touch locations you would not always be able to see depending on the background... such as the very small song list below the currently playing song.  Still, as an option it wouldn't be bad...folks would have to make their own decision.

Well what really would have been good is a dedicated volume rocker. But that can't be fixed on this model.

Yes, a wallpaper could potentially make things hard to read if the colors are poorly chosen. But a good dark background would work nicely.

re: Zune HD improvements

Yeah the volume control thing is super annoying. The wallpaper thing is uber lame also, but seeing as the screen is LED and touchscreen what can you do? I would also like to complain about the following issues w/ the Zune HD:

1. Location of the headphone plug in (annoying when you turn zune and try to type w/ the keyboard with headphones plugged in, headphone piece gets  in the way of your hand)

2. Size of the unit itself (is it made for a kid or an adult)

3.  Pop up volume control (had to re-mention it)

4. NON SUPPORT OF FLASH for the browser (seriously people should be fired over this one)

5. Lack of a real EQ (it would be nice if you could adjust bass and treble possibly khz and hz also)

6. At time pictures in the web browser look blurry

7. Lack of volume the zune30 was louder!!!

8. Lack of Apps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9. I wish it had an IR port so that u could use it as a touchscreen universal remote for home theater and everything

10. Satellite radio would be cool

11. It would be cool if you could record radio on it then listen at a later time so you don't miss shows

12. It would be nice if you could see the clock on all screens

13. Why do we have to turn it on then have to use your finger motion going up to actually see it just takes one more movement that was not needed.

Here is the one thing they did right w/ the HD... They fixed the sync cable instead of having the buttons on the sides of the plug that always fell off they are gone!!! Congrats MS u messed up the whole device and fixed the cable. At least the cable works w/ the 30gb. I'll still use my 30 until u fix the browser~

ndviper-
1)  has to be there, or the whole unit would have to be thicker.  it cannot be in the same area as the screen and battery (which are both large flat devices...)
2)  in general, the market has preferred small over larger devices...with the obvious limiting factor being the screen size.  but of course this is a personal preference issue...I just wouldn't expect them to make it any larger than they absolutely have to.
3) Pop-up?  is this different than the dedicated 'rocker' volume control in hardware?
4)  it'll come no doubt.  disappointing that it wasn't in the first release but that just suggests it was a schedule limitation to me.
5) this is not easy...it has direct cost implications on the hardware
6) haven't noticed this...have you compared to the same page on a PC browser?  anyway, I'd suspect that the website is doing that...many sites support mobile browsers specifically...and do things like that to improve (or attempt to...) overall performance.
7) perhaps...  you may want to try a 3rd party app called mp3gain.  meant for volume leveling.
8) agree...but i'd rather have the HD now and wait for apps, than wait for both.
9)  wow...you really want everything, eh?  well...never hurts to ask!
10) that would require a totally different radio chip set, plus a quite a bit larger antenna... that would be a very different zune.
11)  the HD radio chip used in the HD supposedly has this sort of capabilities.  maybe a future firmware update will unlock this feature?
12)  yes
13)  dunno...but doesn't seem like a big deal to me...

re: Zune HD improvements
I think putting the love/hate rating button on the media button screen would be bonus.  Right now it takes (while i am listening to a song) a click (media button or power button), a swipe (screen saver - for some reason this seems time consuming, anyone else?), and a push of the rating button to rate a song that you are listening to.  If it was on the media screen then i could simply hit the media button and rate the song, and skip it if it was a hate rating.

Just a thought.

Edit: Also it would be nice to have the time of the song on the media screen (pushing the media button on the side) as well.  Maybe have the option to select if you want it to be time up (positive) or time down (negative), or even just have the time bar just like it is on the Now Playing screen.

You can already do this on the Zune HD, just tap and hold on the item, music, video or picture, and you get the option to delete it or pin it to quickplay

I ran into that problem at first too. But don't forget that you can also turn the Zune clockwise as well! That way the headphone cable will be at the top of your left hand while typing sideways, which is much less convenient than the other way around.

Hope that helps!

1) Please we need more volume!!!     (my friends ipod nano is twice as loud!)
2) Clock on all screens
3) in settings an alarm
4) background on all screens, change font color
5) More Quick Play options, example hold the Play button next to music and another menu will pop up with options like play mosted played songs, favorites, etc...
6) Load these APP's up faster, and exit without restarting, with XNA it's pretty much impossible to hack the firmware. (apps useless to long to load and restart)
7) When connected to computer can we use the thing? i mean come on, i understand if it's syncing but if it's just charging.
8) Youtube APP
9) When plugged into like are xbox's let us pick a song from the zunes interface and the xbox can play that, so hard to find songs in xbox dashboard
10) Wireless stream music from zune to xbox so we can play the music on are xbox's

re: Zune HD improvements
Personally I like the headphone jack better on the bottom than on the top. If it gets in the way of your hand, just turn the zune the other way. The volume button doesn't bother me, I'm not astronomically hellbent on the zune getting apps and flash support like everyone else, but they would be cool. And being able to add wallpapers like you could in the old zune would be nice, and not just being able to delete songs from playlists directly from the zune, but add them too.
