Windows 7 and Zune

Hey guys,

I have noticed that a lot of you are installing the Windows 7 Beta and running Zune, which is awesome! I wanted to point out the main cavaets to success with Win7 Beta and Zune, as well as give you a spot to comment about your experience and how we can make it better before Win7 is released.

Feel free to post anything regarding Win7 Beta and Zune, especially any issues you run into or feature requests you may have. Go!

IMPORTANT NOTE AFTER INSTALLING WINDOWS 7 BETA:

Your device may not show up in the software after you install Win7. If this is the case, run the Zune software as an administrator, then connect your device.

To run as an administrator, right click the Zune software shortcut and choose "run as administrator". Once the software launches, connect your device and you should be good to go. You should only have to run as admin once for the Zune to be recognized properly.

IF YOUR ZUNE STILL DOESN'T SHOW UP IN THE SOFTWARE AFTER RUNNING AS ADMINISTRATOR:

Try uninstalling the software, then reinstall it from the package here:

The folks at Ihaveazune.com made a great post regarding some troubleshooting and first experiences, check it out...

re: Windows 7 Beta and Zune
I am running Windows 7, and I have a problem with the wireless sync. When I try connect to my PC via wireless sync, the connection eventually fails.
I can't connect because the Zune wireless driver fails to install properly, and I can't seem to find where I can download & install the driver manually. I'm not sure why, but Windows Update fails to properly install driver updates fur the Zune wireless, my monitor, and my graphics card. Also, the Zune software will only display the "basic" screen graphics, whereas on my old OS, the software displayed the "premium" screen graphics, probably due to the graphics card/monitor driver issues.
I haven't really found any support on the issues.

re: Windows 7 Beta and Zune
I'm running the X64 bit Zune software on Windows 7. I have noticed several things that could be improved about Zune software running on Windows 7, but overall it seems to be working great. First I noticed that the Zune window doesn't seem to be compatible with a couple of windows 7 new features: "Aero shake" and "automatic window resizing (pulling the window to the top or side of the screen)" - this most likely is b/c it is a Beta...
Other than that I still have to use the Zune software more on Windows 7 On another note Internet Explorer 8 has a ton of new features that Could complement Zune that i think could make the Zune experience better. Such as web slices which could be used to track tour dates or Zune marketplace media updates.. On the Zune software, I think it would be awesome if the Zune window could go transparent to match the other windows in Windows 7 also if it could lose the shadow..  More to come once i fool around with Win7 more

For your graphics card, you might try going to the website for the manufacturer of your card and use the latest Vista WHQL signed driver. I had to do that for my Acer netbook and it's working better now. Some manufacturers are making special Win7 beta drivers, so you might keep checking back. For the wireless sync problem, you might try uninstalling and reinstalling the software and see if that helps. What is the error code for the driver in device manager?

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. We are already working on some of the issues you note with the new Win7 features. Keep it coming!

Ok, so are you hitting this error when you try to download, or when you try to play the file? Sounds like it could be an issue with the sound device on your system (which makes no sense, I know). I did some research and here are a few suggestions: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/mediafoundationdevelopment/thread/7f9c0ccd-6988-45ed-9684-b7652ca8e3cc/

re: Windows 7 Beta and Zune
The Zune software was working perfect with Build 7000. But, ever since I upgraded to Build 7022, I'm required to run the Zune Software as an admin to get my Zune to sync. I'm also going to assume that this will kill my ability to sync wirelessly, since I'll have to start the sync, walk to my physical PC, click "Yes" in the UAC prompt, and then let it continue syncing. If I have to go to the PC anyway, I might as well just sync with a cable. All well. I didn't use the wireless sync to often, anyway.

re: Windows 7 Beta and Zune
Windows 7 x64 and 30gig Zune: Everything is ok, except video... will only load small WMV files... no large WMV, no mp4, no m4v... nothing. This is not a DRM issue... podcast that would sync (or convert and sync) under XP Pro will not sync. TV files transcoded by MCE Buddie for the Zune will not load, when loading them before was never an issue. It starts converting the file (and some of the files shoudn't even need conversion), but the conversion stays at 0%. Further, a look into the transcoded files folder reveals nothing has even been attempted, as the folder is empty.

Any thoughts?

re: Windows 7 Beta and Zune
The only small annoyance I've experienced with teh Zune software and Win 7 is that the Zune.exe doesn't always close after the program closes. If this happens, I get an error when I try to launch the player the next time that states that Zune is already running. A quick 3 finger salute and ending tast on the Zune.exe allows me to launch the software normally again.
