Nirvana or Pearl Jam?
NIRVANA.

1: You probably wouldnt even have heard of Pearl Jam with out them

2: In Utero is possibly the most artistic and emotionally enthralling album I have ever heard. Uncomparable.

Nirvana, I find myself skipping less songs when I listen to them. Pearl Jam is good don't get me wrong.

re: Nirvana or Pearl Jam?

Many other artists/genres before Nirvana put Seattle on the map musically. Nirvana brought MTV and the rest of the world to Seattle and made grunge a household name. If it were not for Mudhoney or Mother Love Bone, neither Nirvana or Pearl Jam might exist...those bands are the definition of grunge.

To the question, I'll have to pick Pearl Jam. For the simple fact that they are still around making music, I'm not a huge fan of suicide, it proves nothing and Kobain took away other band members chances of making good music for many years.

Nirvana was good...just have to wonder how good they could have been.

IMO:

Don't get me wrong Nirvana was good, but not my thing. Not to take away from dead people's accomplishments, but when a band or artist goes for a few really good years then dies or disbands, then people think that they would have kept on going and that they could do no wrong. Same thing happened with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. If you want to pull the card that we wouldn't have heard of Pearl Jam without Nirvana, it might be true but it gives better a whole new meaning. I might be over-analyzing this.

Its true if we only look at longevity of a band, then Nirvana was not better than Pearl Jam since PJ is still around making music, as well as Alice In Chains and Melvins (another grunge originator). Jimi and Janis would have been amazing had they stayed alive IMO.....I mean when you look at that time frame, look at the success of Santana, Grateful Dead and Journey......Right now Jimi would be playing with Eric Clapton on his Crossroads tours along with all the other guitar greats, we can all dream, because that would be friggin AMAZING!!!!!!

re: Nirvana or Pearl Jam?
i gotta go with pearl jam, to answer the question but alice in chains is great as well. also soundgarden had chris cornell not left the group. that's just me but i am a little biased because i grew up in seattle and witnessed them all blow up seemingly overnight, mainly because of the nevermind album, but there first album bleach was just as good.

I totally agree with this, except I don't think Nirvana was a good band. But that's just my opinion.

re: Nirvana or Pearl Jam?

Most definitely Nirvana.  Pearl Jam is a great band with lots more technical talent and a long discography.  But Kurt Cobain's raw talent is just genius.  In Utero was an artistic achievement.  Kurt felt remorse for "selling out" with Nevermind and came back with an album that challenged the band's fan base in a way that most bands would not be able to, even if they dared to.

There would be no Pearl Jam today without Nirvana.  And lets not forget that Nirvana's career in the spotlight was so short, yet its influence continues for almost 20 years.  That says alot.

I totally respect Pearl Jam and anyone who believes they were the better band.  But to me, its no contest.
