Reproducible Zune 4.0 Software Social Crash
So I've got this crash that I've managed to reproduce 100% of the time on 3 machines.

1 Acer AOD250-1151 Netbook with an Intel Atom N270 CPU running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
1 Dell XPS410 Desktop with Intel Core2Duo E6600 CPU both on Win 7 Ultimate 32 and 64bit version (yes both).
1 HP Laptop (not sure of model since it wasn't mine) running an AMD CPU running Windows Vista.

Here's how I've managed to reproduce it.

Open Zune Software
Click on Social
Click on Me
Click on Badges

As stated this has caused crashes on all 4 systems.  I have a screenshot listing the exact error message located here

I also should note that on Vista x64 I also get slightly different error messages.

1 is one I encountered when I opened the software too fast after it crashed showing the following:

Problem Event Name:    APPCRASH
  Application Name:    Zune.exe
  Application Version:    4.0.740.0
  Application Timestamp:    4a9e2230
  Fault Module Name:    ntdll.dll
  Fault Module Version:    6.1.7600.16385
  Fault Module Timestamp:    4a5be02b
  Exception Code:    40000015
  Exception Offset:    0000000000051da0
  OS Version:    6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
  Locale ID:    1033
  Additional Information 1:    ea94
  Additional Information 2:    ea94bc9108feac786a7a994276399116
  Additional Information 3:    0285
  Additional Information 4:    02859beff86912eef573b6dddc14f4c3

2 is the one encountered on Win7 64 (as the earlier screenshot is Win7 32) is as follows:

  Problem Event Name:    CLR20r3
  Problem Signature 01:    zune.exe
  Problem Signature 02:    4.0.740.0
  Problem Signature 03:    4a9e2230
  Problem Signature 04:    ZuneShell
  Problem Signature 05:    3.0.0.0
  Problem Signature 06:    4a9e20cf
  Problem Signature 07:    507
  Problem Signature 08:    10
  Problem Signature 09:    Microsoft.Zune.Shell.ZuneShell
  OS Version:    6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
  Locale ID:    1033

Now I've double and triple checked my install media, as well as performing a sector by sector scan of my hard drive, as well as RAM tests.
Also since this has occured on 3 separate machines running 3 different operating systems I'd assume it's not just me ;)

I tried and it doesn't crash for me.  It shows my badges just fine.  But I am running XP SP3.  So maybe it's just Vista and Windows 7?

Very possible.

I'm thinking it may just be Vista/7 related as I haven't tried it under XP at all. When XP Mode for Windows 7 rolls out next week I'll test it in that environment to see what happens.

Mine used to do this all of the time.  The reason it doesn't anymore is that I just started viewing this on the web profile instead of through the software because it would crash on my HP Mini running XP SP3.

So that knocks out the theory that it's limited to Vista/7 configurations.  Thanks for that input Lauren :)

Mine does not do this, and I'm running Windows 7.  Are you sure it isn't something related specifically to your Social account?  A "corrupt" badge item that might be triggering this crash?  It sounds to me like it might not be on the client side of things.

If you're able to, try logging on with another user's account and see what results you get.

Corey - really, this doesn't happen to you?

It's a known issue that if you have a forums or a reviewer badge, the Zune software will crash on the "badges" page in the software. And I know you have a forums badge, so it should be happening to you. If it isn't...I'm actually more concerned, since we believe we already understand the cause of this bug.

To everyone else: Yeah, this is a known issue with the software. As with any issue, I can't promise whether/when a fix would come, but generally bugs that cause crashes are considered bad and fixed in the next possible release.

Ah okay, sorry I lied.  It does crash.  But I have to wait for it to populate the data for my 250+ listener badges first, which takes about 3-4 minutes.  And then it crashes. =)  But before then everything is perfectly viewable.

Thanks for the update on that Jessica :)

Good to know that it's a known issue with hopefully a fix coming soon :)
