Zune Headphone Input
I'm having problems with my zune and it's been going on for about...2 weeks I guess. For starters when I was listening to music all of a sudden I'm starting to hear a distorted sound from the headphones, and at first I thought the main problem was the headphones itself. So I bought like another pair and tried them out to see if it works, and the problem occur again. I bout a 3rd pair of headphones, and it happened again. After trying out the 3 headphones I bought they work on other music devices including my computer, and I came to realized that it was the zune itself. When I plugged my headphones in the zune to be sure that it wasn't acting the same. So it was acting funny, yet again, and I had to adjust around the chords to prevent the sound from being all funny again. I had to try to keep the chords still, but as soon as I do that my zune shuts off and restarts itself. There wasn't an error message after that. Everything was normal but when tried it again, keeping the chords straight, preventing the sound to be distorted, but once I move the chord around it does the same thing.

-If there's anything you know about this problem please let me know immediately, and tell me what I should do to solve this problem.-

Were you listening to the radio or downloaded/ripped music? The headphone cable is the antenna for the radio so if you were listening to the radio moving it that could cause bad reception.

it sounds to me a bit like your headphone socket is loose...that would distort the sound, but I don't think it would cause the shut down and restart...  usually it just pauses the music (which happens intentionally if you pull the plug during playback.)

That has happened to me before, very rare though. My device is just sitting on my desk and I move around and the cord tugs about and all of a sudden the music stops...device shuts off and then goes into restart mode. I don't have a loose headphone plug and it NEVER happens when my device is plugged into my home system (using a 1/4" plug from headphone jack to Aux input). So I have to agree, that if you happen to move the cord just right somekind of electrical fault occurs and the device will stop and restart. The other thing I thought of is outside electrical interference, like a computer screen, laptop screen, cell phone......Although I never have my wireless enabled on my Zune device.

Just a thought. But for me though it is very rare when it happens.

Zune is AWESOME!!...since Nov 2006 Black30GB and Pink30GB (my wifes'!!!)

I used to have my Zune randomly restart on itself, and apparently it was because of corrupt files.  I'm not sure what the distorted sound is from, but if you've downloaded crappy music that could be it?  That's probably not right but it's possible haha.  I agree with the guy above me though, it could be a loose headphone jack.  Time for Zune HD?

When the device shuts down and restarts itself, it's an indication that it encountered an unrecoverable error...that's a software fault.  Could it be caused by a bad or loose headphone socket...?  Until this thread, I'd never heard of that...but I certainly can't say it's impossible as I don't know what that socket is near inside, etc. etc.  But, if it is happening due to movement then there is some mechanical issue in addition to anything else going on...and that suggests you can't fix it by rebooting, or reinstalling firmware, and so on.  In other words...I would say it's time to put in a support request for those still in warranty.

When you pull out the headphones the unit pauses - is ti possable that a quick in-out may have confused the Zune?

Hey it was a thought!  I figured a rapid on-off on any switch cannot be good for any processor.

And not a bad one...  but a microprocessor is really nothing more than a few million transistors switching on and off at high megahertz rates!  The speed of some external switch is pathetic by comparison.  Doesn't mean it couldn't be that, but I really suspect it's some sort of interference (electrical noise) or mechanical problem.  Fortunately though, neither of us has to really figure it out...

I really think it is an electrical charge type issue. Anytime it has happened to me, my device is just sitting here on my desk within hands reach. The cord is not taught, its very loose with plenty of slack. And when it happened it was only some slight movement nowhere near enough to pull the plug out of the socket.

Now again this has not happened while it is plugged into my home system just sitting on the main power amp. I think it may be something to do (in my case) with being very near to my laptop, laptop screen and a monitor screen as I use dual screens. Maybe a static charge of somekind just enough to disrupt play and start the device over.

Again, I am not concerned about it, its not my device..it plays perfectly fine. Before this post, I have never mentioned this in the forums.
