How Tough Is Your Zune?
I was doing work in a field at a reservoir/park near where I live, and of course I was listening to my Zune. As I was leaving it fell out of my pocket and I noticed about 10 minutes later. I frantically searched the field with 5 other people for only about 15 minutes because the park was closing. I was very angry, you can believe me. I don't like leaving my expensive electronics out in fields where they (are supposed to) break. Well I came back the next week and after working for a while one of my friends found my Zune right as we were leaving. During the past week it had rained 2 days and snowed 2 days so I was happy that someone had found my Zune but I didn't really expect much out of it. It immediately turned on and I was able to listen to it! Did I mention that there was still Ice frozen under the screen? I brought it home and used a trick I got from a magazine. Put your wet electronics in a bag full of rice. I know, sounds weird right? It actually works though, because the rice absorbs the moisture right out of them all by itself. Now I have my Zune back in fine and working order.

Cool story bro'.

I'm a screenprinter, and anyone who does this, knows it can get pretty messy and there are chemicals involved. Chemicals that are not very friendly with electronics. My Zune has been with me on the job, just about everyday, no problems.

re: How Tough Is Your Zune?
A few weeks back, we had some nasty, nasty rain going on, tornado warning and all--the sirens went off a couple of times. After the rain slowed to more of a drizzle, I started walking around outside. Rain got into my phone and ruined it. I tried the rice deal with it 3 or 4 times, and I tried using a hairdryer as well. They only button that worked was the end call button.

But, how tough is my Zune? Oh, it's definitely tough. Last year, first semester, I was leaving a class and walking down a cement walkway. I dropped my Zune, and as I noticed, I quickly thought, "oh crap..." So, to avoid having it hit the concrete, I kicked it into the grass. A few days later, I was leaving the same class. As I walked out the door, it got caught on the door handle and flung off my headphones and into a wall. I also DID drop it on the concrete once or twice and dropped it in the street as well once. That thing never quit working. Sadly, though, that Zune was stolen on-campus (one of the reasons I left that school was I had at least $700 of stuff stolen there).

But I have a new 30 GB Zune, and I've taken much better care of it, minus wear and tear scratches on the screen.

When you put your Zune in the rice how long did you leave it in the bag and was it fully covered by the rice?  This is my other post going into more detail on this method: How To Fix a Wet Zune.

re: How Tough Is Your Zune?

I used to have a 8GB Zune that I kept safe with a cover made out of tape and thick paper. It mostly served for aesthetic purposes, but even so, it managed to survive a few falls. My brother had a 120 GB Zune for about three months before he dropped it and accidentally stepped on it. When I sold him mine and purchased an 80GB, I bought a Speck Toughskin for it. It's reassuring to know that Zunes were built to handle abuse, but I ain't taking any chances.

I got my bro a similar toughskin for his 8GB. XD

re: How Tough Is Your Zune?

Yeah, I've put my Zune 4 in the washing machine twice now.

I dried it off, gave it a few days in a warm, dry place, and plugged it in to recharge & sync. Works.

The Zune pad needs some extra drying time (its obvious there's still water in the circuit there...) and the battery life has taken a real hit (waterlogging would do that.)

But it works.

Let's see you throw your iPod in the washing machine.
