I mistackenly started to listen to music on my Zune HD right when I began charging it for the first time. I also tried to put videos that I bought throught iTunes on the Zune HD and it chrased and restarted. I charged it for about 4 hours in total. But the battery is half gone after listening to music and some radio for 3 1/2 hours. I called Microsoft and they told me that I may have messed up the battery life, and I should let it drain completely then fully recharge it. I will try to purchase a Zune wall charger for this. But I'm just wondering did I really mess up the battery that bad? It's have gone after about 4 hours of listening to music and WI-FI turned of the whole time. I always power down the Zune HD and cut it off when not in use. Has anyone else experienced this?
The clue is in what they told you to do to fix it. Runnng the battery all the way down and then recharging it (without interruption!) until full is the recipe to recalibrate an uncalibrated battery
gauge. Lithium battery gauges have this sort of 'problem' relatively frequently...and it's not permanent nor is it damage. It's annoying when it happens but it's a fact of life for lithium batteries. In fact the best way to use a lithium battery in normal use (partial recharges and partial discharges) actually causes the gauge to lose calibration slowly over time. Some laptop makers tell their customers to recalibrate every month or so!
