Zune Pad Not working (Software or hardware issue?)
I have a red Zune 8GB which I bought about a year and a half ago (so it's out of warranty).

Recently I started having problems where if I would click upwards on the zune pad the device would actually scroll downwards.  While this was slightly annoying, I could still navigate with touch sensitivity so I didn't mind that much.

Now a few weeks ago my zune touch pad completely stopped responding.  If I touch the Zune pad the device doesn't light up, I can't click anything, it's just not working.  The play/pause and back buttons do work fine however.  What's funny is that sometimes the Zune Pad does start working spontaneously so I can kind of sort of navigate about 5 percent of the time when I want to navigate.  But when I click on the zune pad it freezes again...

After reading many previous posts on the forums I reinstalled the firmware.  After the fresh firmware install the zune worked fine...for like 2 minutes and then when I clicked the center button to go into a menu it froze again.

I have noticed that the Zune Pad freezes when I click it.  I tried draining the baterry, and again it worked for a few minutes before I clicked into a menu and it froze...

Sometimes if I click enough on the zune pad I will hear the music stutter, and then my zune restarts.

I can't figure out what else I can do.  Is this a software issue or a hardware issue?  It seems like the zune pad still works at times which seems to lend that it's a firmware issue.  However you would think that after reinstalling the firmware it would work fine.

Does anyone have any ideas on what else I can do to save my zune?

Thanks

Having the same issue here. 4G Zune. Erased all content. Reformatted. Everything seems fine. Can scroll up and down but as soon as the pad is pressed (clicked) it freezes again. Can't reboot it since the pad will stop working so I "Erase all content" to restart it and everything works again until the pad is pressed and so on. Anyone else with this problem?

I'm Having the exact same problem and more with my red 8GB Zune. I just got it less then a month ago. I hit the up button and it goes down. The touch pad also starts scrolling really fast from the left to right or vice versa randomly. In example  when playing music checking other albums/artists/playlists ect... also the center button freaks out and 98% of the time doesn't work when you want it to and the touch pad basically does what it wants
anyone have any ideas before i lose my mind :(

Call support.  You're still under warranty so they'll send you a new device out in a few days time.  Unfortunately for me I'm out of warranty which really sucks....

It seems to me like a lot of Zune Pad's have been having problems.....

I have problems with mine. Zune 80gb. Touch pad will only respond to right click, regardless of what button you actually push (center, left, top, down). I am also out of the warranty range and am at a loss about what to do...

re: Zune Pad Not working (Software or hardware issue?)
EXACTLY my problem, except I have a black 4 gig. I'm not sending MS money to replace my Zune; they should just make a patch. I did nothing to cause this and am shocked that they would implicate me as the cause by charging me to send me another one/fix mine. I paid for it; I expect it to work. Of course I'm about 4 months out of warranty range. Apparently this struck a whole BATCH of Zunes, from what I've read, and it seems to be a memory-access problem (touch + center buttons cause directional lockup) since it isn't software or hardware related. Someone needs to get to the bottom of this or I'm just going to buy a Zen or something. I can't believe they want me to shell out money to fix something that absolutely was no fault of my own.

re: Zune Pad Not working (Software or hardware issue?)
I have almost the same problem. I have an 8GB Red Zune for almost Two years, and I tried to unlock it but the touch pad wouldn't work. I then tried to press down, but It wouldn't work. I called in and all they told me was that It was on "Lock" but it clearly wasn't because I would press back and the lock screen would reload. I tried letting the battery die, and the touch pad would work for a few seconds until I clicked it in to select an option. I called in again and they said to restart it holding down and back, but i can't do that if THE WHOLE PAD DOESN'T WORK!!  If anyone has a way to help me, or an Idea, please do! I can't send it in because I am way past my warranty...
