30GB Constantly Restarts...Clicking noise...
Yesterday, my 30GB Zune was dead after having played it in my car's Aux. jack, so I brought it inside to hook it up to the computer to charge.  I plugged in the USB cable and it charged a bit, brought up the Zune software, but never showed in the software that the device was connected to sync or anything.  It then started restarting itself over and over. It'll go black, load a Zune loading screen with the progress bar, click, and then turn black again and keep doing that over and over.  I can't get it to do anything else.  When it's unplugged, and I try to turn it on, it'll flash the Zune logo for a split second and go black again.

What do I do?

consequence of sound.

Go to the OP in this thread and 'initialize disk'  http://forums.zune.net/231510/ShowPost.aspx
This will erase everything on the disk, including the firmware- then it will load a fresh copy of the firmware when you connect it to the PC.   Best guess as to what happened to you is a severe hard disk error...if it is just a data error, this should fix it.  If it's a mechanical problem...then repair is your next option.  (I hope you have all your content backed up on your PC...)  The clicking noise you hear is the hard disk...that doesn't always indicate a mechanical disk problem...it can be the head clicking aginst the stops as it seeks unsuccessfully.

re: 30GB Constantly Restarts...Clicking noise...
same thing happened to me on July 4th.  I was listening to it while driving, and all of a sudden, my zune 30 just turned off.
Having had this experience before, I locked it and then unlocked it to turn it back on, and it was doing this weird Zune logo cycling over and over again.  I've tried so many things others suggested, but with no luck.
The zune team has to listen to this and do something about it. I really don't understand how the heck this happened since it was not caused by any shock such as from dropping it on the floor.
Anyone had any luck with this?

re: 30GB Constantly Restarts...Clicking noise...
So I'll repeat and expand what I posted earlier...
Restarting is an indication the unit could not recover from a serious error.  That could be a corrupted song file, or a firmware error.
You can erase all and resync to fix the song error (unless you notice it always happens on the same song...if so just delete and resync that one after verifying that it plays OK on the PC.)  Or you can do the initialize disk process which erases all content and also the firmware...which is restored when you connect and resync.
The disk drive making repeated clicking noises indicates it is 'seeking' unsuccessfully.  This could be due to damage to the data on the disk (see above) or it could be imminent disk drive failure if erase all or init disk doesn't solve the problem.

re: 30GB Constantly Restarts...Clicking noise...
actually i realized that when the device is connected, after going through the repetitious zune logo cycling, it eventually goes to the main menu.
However, as soon as I disconnect it from computer, the device turns off.
Based on this, I'm assuming that my battery life has completely expired that it just doesn't have any juice left in it.
Perhaps if I replace the battery, it will work again?
By they way I already Initialized my device about 10 times already following the directions.  No luck.
Resynced my whole library, still no luck.
My deduction leads to the cause of this to the battery failure.
Does anyone agree?

Yes, that sounds reasonable to me.  However, there is enough uncertainty around hardware failure modes that I'd suggest you get it checked by an expert.  Zune will do repairs on out of warranty units for a flat fee ($160 I think...) and there is an online site that gets good reviews called rapidrepair.com (they do iPods and Zunes.)  Rapidrepair.com does free repair estimates...although I don't know if there are strings attached to that.
(Batteries are relatively cheap...until you find out the battery was killed by some defect on the main circuit board...if you know what I mean.)
Good luck!

Has anyone had success doing this?

I got it to work!  I simply bought a replacement battery for zune 30 on ebay for ~$8, and I tried it, and voila!  It works now!  Anyone having the same issue, you should definitely give this a try!
