Underoath calling Avenged Sevenfold out?!?!

I don't know if any of you guys have heard this but I guess one of the Underoath guitarists had an interview for Metal Hammer and he really called Avenged out hardcore. What do you guys think about this crap talking? I posted the article below:

Underoath guitarist Tim McTague has a few choice words about Avenged Sevenfold.

Metal Hammer was out in Austria and Italy with US metallers Underoath. Here is an excerpt from our chat with guitarist, Tim McTague, about how the band may be teetering on the edge of sounding like a crossover band - more mainstream than they feel.

“What’s popular, to a degree, is what pushed me to find something that isn’t popular for Underoath. Chiodos or Escape The Fate who do kind of the same thing – screaming and singing and whatever – do it their way, so we’re like, ‘let’s do it completely the opposite’ because we don’t want to be associated with them. It’s not about ‘the thing’ it’s the approach to the thing that’s important.

“People might associate us with Avenged Sevenfold because they’re pissed republicans and ‘so metal’, but they’re a gimmick, they’re a circus. They can’t play and they can’t write a song. What’s worse is the way they look. If you need to have make-up and crappy names like Synyster Gates to sell records, then you shouldn’t be here. That’s not rock’n’roll to me. Arena rock maybe, but not real rock’n’roll. If you’re basing yourself on how cool you are or how many girls you can trick into thinking your band is cool you can just… take that home. I’m not saying that’s what Avenged Sevenfold do, but they do a lot of crap that makes me think, ‘that’s why you and us will never be the same’. At the same time, we don’t write a really heavy record ‘just to show all those Avenged Sevenfold fans what real metal is like’

Is there a danger of cutting your nose off to spite your face that way?

“Yes. Beyond giving bands who we don’t like or think are doing things properly the middle finger, we need make sure is still what we believe in. Not just doing something that’s not cool, because we don’t want to be likened to bands that do it that we don’t like.”

Avenged Sevenfold will play this year’s Sonisphere festival.

Sonisphere will be headlined by Metallica and Linkin Park and will take place on August 1st - 2nd at Knebworth. Also on the bill will be Nine Inch Nails, Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Machine Head, Lamb Of God, Alice In Chains, Mastodon, Anthrax, Airbourne, Thin Lizzy, Killing Joke and The Sword.

re: Underoath calling Avenged Sevenfold out?!?!

I take issue with anyone who is doing something only because it's not popular. Nothing's more hardcore than doing something different just to say FU to the establishment. What are these guys 12? Mommy and daddy say don't do it so we're going to do it? That's hardcore? No thanks. To me it's the same as doing something only because it IS popular. Lame.

I don't have any problem with bands that feel like they should put on a show for people coming to see them. Gwar, Kiss, Alice Cooper, NIN and David Bowie could teach these clowns a thing or two. There's nothing wrong with just going out there and playing, but why crap on a band (and by extension their fans) for wanting their fans to have an experience like that.

What a tool.

Nice post. I do have to agree. I understand having your own style or whatever, but I'm pretty sure Underoath sounds EXACTLY the same as every other lame "hardcore" screamo band out there. So it really doesn't look like they are original to me. As for the annoying screaming.... I'll pass.

It's funny because they're both emo bands with 12 year-old girl fanbases. Trying to tag the hardcore label onto themselves is shameful. Somewhere, Henry Rollins is crying.

Underoath can kiss it.

Tim is so childish he goes for the make up thing on brian?

*tsk *tsk

Brian has more talent than him.

Tim sucks and needs to get a life because i speak for all the avenged sevenfold supporters when i say

"I stand by the band and say that Brian can out-talent Tim McFag anyday"

I'm no Avenged Sevenfold fan, but is Underoath really in position to call anyone a gimmick?

It's not like they even do anything original in the first place, but even if their style isn't as popular as Avenged Sevenfold's (though I do think they sound similar), it's definately not unpopular like he claimed it to be.

that's hilarious. frankly both bands are about as hardcore as mr. rogers. i don't know. i'm 25 and from a different gen than most of their listeners so maybe that's why i don't get the whole "emo" addition to metal or "hardcore" music. if you look at my page if listen to a crazy variety of music but even i know these kind of bands are just about 10 different kinds of god awful.

Im a used to be Underoath fan before they went all screamo and crap but sitting there bagging on freakin A7X is wrong.

Underoath couldn't and NEVER WILL be any better then Avenged sevenfold, because personally it sounds like he is just making up excuses as to why Underoath sucks and their fanbase has shrunk over the years.

This makes me mad.

Wow. What'd Avenged Sevenfold do to this guy? Someone sounds a little jealous. Everyone I know loved Underoath's older CDs, but the latest CD is just trash. I can't find anything musical about it... it sounds more like noise to me.
