Favorite avant-garde style.
My all time favorite is still Tom Waits.
His vaunderville style of music is just sooooooo good!

If you're going to fake your age on the internet, you might as well act like it.

re: Favorite avant-garde style.

Especially on those spoken word intervals. I've been meaning to make a playlist of nothing but his spoken word stuff.  Would make a great audiobook. It's interesting that he didn't fully embrace a more warped sensibility until he started writing with his wife, Kathleen Brennan. Funnily enough, he was asked in an interview recently as what he's been listening to the most, and because he has kids in thier teens and 20's, it's all rap music. Here's a direct quote:

"Missy Elliott. I'm crazy about her. She did some video where she's on the beach doing the jerk in a wife beater. She's out of her mind. She's so natural. It's like she's always been around. Chamillionaire. I listen to a lot of stuff that my kids listen to. You know, Jay-Z, the Beastie Boys."

Captain Beefheart for me.  Waits actually states him as an influence in some of his work.  Brennan introduced him to Beefheart's work, maybe that's where the "warped" stuff came from.  Beefheart's most definitely a warped individual.

Things are not as bad as they seem. They are worse than that. They are also better than that.
