Read Me First: How Best To Get Help Here

This is a work in progress.  Suggestions for further edits can be made via PM.  I'll also be checking the forum for posts and tips marked "Helpful" and use those to build a "Common Solutions" guide  - so if something solved your problem, mark it helpful!

Howdy.  Welcome to the Setup and Installation forum.  If you're here for Setup and Installation, we're happy to work with you.

Posting Guidelines

Clearly when things go wrong, that's horrible and frustrating.  Unfortunately that can often colour communication to the point that people leave out valuable information.  Then it takes longer to resolve their problem, which is even sadder.  I for one believe making you happy is a good thing, so if you could be gracious enough to please include this basic information in your post, I and the generous and beautiful people helping would be most grateful:

  1. What version of Windows are you using?  Windows XP SP2?  Vista SP1 64-bit?  An Etch-A-Sketch?
    1. If you are on a Media Center system, what is the file version of c:\windows\system32\ehome\ehshell.exe ?  ( 5.1.2715.0 or newer is required on Media Center systems.)
  2. What exactly were you doing when you ran into the problem?  (These are the steps needed to reproduce the error.)
  3. What exactly is the error being encountered?  What badness happens?
    1. If it's an error message: what is the exact error message?  If you get a link to a URL, what URL is it?
    2. If it's a crash, what is the specific fault information for that crash according to Event Viewer (found under Administrative Tools on your system)?  (If you're using Windows Vista, the Problem Reports and Solutions Center control panel's View Problem History is an easier way to get this data.)
    3. If you can't sign in with Zune -- can you sign in directly at http://zune.net ?  (If you can't... how are you here?)
  4. Are there related errors occurring on the system?  For example, if Zune can't update and Windows Update doesn't work, that might be related.  If Zune was crashing and Windows Media Player was crashing, that too might be related.

Please do not attach your problem to an unrelated post by someone else.  You're more valuable than that!  Click the "Post" button to create your own Post for your specific problem.  That way your problem is less likely to get lost in the chatter of discussing some other issue.  If things do get sorted out, please do update your post to point this out so that other people don't continue trying to solve it.  Plus when you update with what steps you took to resolve the problem, that lets other people benefit.

Thanks!
