Why are you people opening up your Zunes...
That's just retarded. If Microsoft sees that you tampered with the Zune, they can withold your warranty so you can't use it anymore if your Zune actually breaks from something nonfixable...

I'm willing to bet about 95% of the 30Gb Zunes are already out of Warranty. Mine expired in November...

So if microsoft has to go the way of actual replacement zunes, when you send in your zune now, they'll say "hey zunemember43 tampered with his zune, and is thus ineligible for his replacement zune" because they won't know if you tampered with it before or after the event.

Reality check, we are talking thousands of Zunes.  Do you really think they are going to closely examine each and every one that is returned.  I'm curious how Microsoft is going to fix this.  Without actually doing the reset, you have a brick.  Their only option other than replacing them is to disconnect the battery.  This screw up is immense.

if you let it sit long enough, won't the battery completely die, thus doing the same thing as dis-connecting the battery? just thought that might be the case.

I open my Zune because I have done it dozens of time, appreciate my music, and my warranty already expired.

yes but unless you have a wall or car charger then they will freeze as soon as you plug them into the pc.  You need to sync the updated date (see my post 100% zune fix for info) but as soon as you start to charge with a pc then it will try to boot=freeze again.  It really is not hard to open them and fix this issue!

and if your are carful then u can't tell it was opened i did not even put a mark on mine!

I have a speaker dock and a car charger.  I've been hitting play for about 10 minutes and keep getting that screen with the battery.  I figure if I do it for a while, the battery will totally die, then just charge it up again and see what happens.

re: Why are you people opening up your Zunes...

Opening ANY electronic device is not a good idea. You allow dirt, dust particles to get inside and potentially cause other issues which probably will not be fixable. As well as the possibility of dropping something on the open portion and totally trashing the device.

People just leave the device alone till a fix is sent our then deal with it then. If you break the case or screw up the inside while opening it, who are you going to blame then??

Zune is AWESOME!!...since Nov 2006 Black30GB and Pink30GB (my wifes'!!!)

re: Why are you people opening up your Zunes...
Seeing as the Zune is not airtight, unless you are working in a construction zone, I wouldn't say opening it is too bad for it. Dust particles are going to get in there inevitably, so no need to worry about that. If you are careful about it, it's pretty hard to break one of these beasts. Opening it consists of removing 1 plastic object, unscrewing 2 screws, and taking the back cover off of it. Tadaa! You have access to the battery, which you unplug, and throw it all back together for the magic of a working Zune.
