Scratch that...

Apparently it resorts to frozen status after plugging it back in....

re: FIXED!! Zune 30 frozen screen
This fix just worked for me (apparently), and mine is back up and working.  It's a pain removing the plastic shielding, and you have to be careful not to break the delicate connector, but once you get those tiny screws removed, the housing comes apart easily enough.

You said the battery connectors were at the top left and right, but mine were at the bottom left and right.  Did you just have the orientation wrong, or does that speak to different generations?

UPDATE********
This did NOT work, not permanently, anyway.  Initially all was well, but then I connected it to my computer to charge and sync with the software.  It almost immediately reset and is frozen again at the logo page.  No doubt I could unfreeze it again, but what's the point if it's just going to mess up again when I reconnect it?

I did the hard reset. Seems to be charging just fine. I don't want it to brick again so I'm not going to open the software. Thanks for the info!

Good plan. I got it back up with the hard reset after a few tries, but forgot that I still had the software up on the computer. It bricked again.

My problem now is that the battery is pretty much dead at this point. (it was low to begin with. I was gonna charge it) and it doesn't have quite enough juice to restart. I'm going to leave it on the charger for a little bit bricked and hopefully even if the software doesn't load the battery will get some charge...

re: FIXED!! Zune 30 frozen screen

I don't think this is directly related to the ZUNE software on your computer. I've not plugged mine into my compter in over a month. It was sitting in an A/V cradle off (standby I think) overnight last night, so there's no way my computer can be to blame really.

Also, I'm now wondering if leaving it in the cradle for an extended period of time (to keep the battery charged?) will do more harm than good in the long run. It seems the drive is spinning full force (there's a whirring sound and she's hot), and how do I know the battery charging system is in control (is it overcharging?). But if I remove it and let the battery go dead will I be able to still do the fix as stated above (with a dead battery)? Geez, can't wait till they wake up on the west cost and let us know what's going on.

Foot note (7:30 am): From reading other posts it does seem that it can be recharged (to some unknown degree) after the battery has gone dead even in its current locked-up state, so, perhaps letting it "die" until we've a sure way to fix it may be the best course.

re: FIXED!! Zune 30 frozen screen
A short while later...

It does seem that just having the Zune connected will charge the battery a bit. which is good.

However the hard reset is not working for me anymore. Which is really bad.

I can get past the initial loading screen. The bar goes up fast about 9/10ths of the way. Does a last little push. Click click whir of the hard drive and ...blank screen. Nothing. nada.

Plug it back on to charge some more and it goes back to freezing.

I'm not happy.

It's occurred to me that this problem must be date/time related, in which case any sort of a fix outside of a software/firmware one may be short lived at best (could this be just the need for a new day/year?).

I found a online video demonstating a battey change but can't recall the exact location...but it detailed the two screws and gently prying the sides....I'm going to hold off so i don't ruin it.

I'm holding off trying it too "EinsteinR", for three reasons. One, I may break something in the process. Two, although I'm one month outside of warranty, any chance for repair or recompense from Microsoft may be hampered on disassembly. And three, from what I've read so far this fix has not yet proven permanent.

I'm going to wait till Microsoft comes out with an official fix before I start damaging my Zune
