re: Tip: Digital Copy Movies DO NOT Work On Zune Players

I'm seeing this request a lot (and the correct answer being given too) but I thought I would make a "direct" post about it, with the answer in the title. With a lot of the newer DVD movies, a digital copy is included with the DVD movie you purchase. This digital copy allows you to put a copy of the movie on a DVD onto a portable media player such as a 'Plays for Sure' (a.k.a. Certified for Vista) player or an iPod device. Here's the thing, these digital copies are not compatible with the Zune mp3 players.

While the video provided for the digital copy is indeed a WMV video it has a different type of DRM wrapper than what the Zune devices use for their videos. As a result, these WMV digital copies are currently incompatible with the Zune devices. Let's hope this changes in the future.

So what do we do? I have several of these 'digital copies' of movies that I purchased, and I don't want to have to spend more money to buy it on the Zune Marketplace in order to have a copy of the movies on my Zune. Does anyone have an answer to that? Any free downloads? I think that Zune (or the people that run Zune, rather ) need to fix this problem. If they are trying to compete with the iPod (or any other mp3 player that supports video formats) then they need to fix this problem.

Until that point in time, does anyone know if there is a free download video converter to fix this problem? I have one that came with my younger sisters 'Insignia Sport' mp3 player and it will not convert videos that are Copy Protected.

I have a Converter for the Zune , it cost about $20 USD. and it copies  all of my DVD , But it will not copy the 'digital copies'.
The 'digital copies' have there one tip of format  and Zune will not play them at all !
  you can not copy them to a Zune or Convert them . all you do is put them on your PC and be happy

As mentioned in other threads, you'll need to use one of the various tools (many free) that can convert any DVD to a compatible format.  This will work for virtually any DVD, no 'digital copy' feature is necessary... it's just a little more time consuming and less convenient.  But it's far more flexible.

what programs do you guys use?

My concern is, Is it legal? I really don't want to find my self in a legal situation because I was converting my dvd for my Zune.

yes it is Legal , because it is for your use only .
if you are go to sale it then it is e-legal.

I use the cucusoft zune video converter and just isert the dvd and it decodes and recodes it for me that is the easiest way. I have a lot of room on my gears 2 special edition zune. see everyone on gears 2!

I too use cucusoft.  It's so easy to use that it's damn near idiot-proof.  And being an idiot myself, I should know!

Has any tried this?

Open up VLC Media player.
Go to File -> Open File.
Browse for the File, select ok, then check Stream/Save and go to settings.

Under settings menu check the "File" box and click browse. Name it (name of movie).mp4
For Encapsulation Method, click MP4
Transcoding Options: Video select mp4v and for Audio select mp4a.

Click ok, and ok again, it will then go through the movie saving it to an mp4. Run it when done.
