pics are converted? Can it be avoided?

it seems pictures are compressed when syncing, from the space difference I see. Part of the reason I wanted pics on it was for backup, but that's not a backup. Plus I am guessing if they were shown on a tv it would not look as good compressed for the small screen. Is there a way to store uncompressed? I sure wish it just showed the files as a hard drive, i would just dump them on there, and be able to pull off quickly...

The software, by design, converts the pics for viewing on the Zune device screen.

I think the Zune software converts a picture larger than 640x480 or 480x640.
