Do I need to XNA Beta simply to RUN games?
I've got no skills when it comes to developing games. so if I was only interested in PLAYING the Zune games, do I still need the XNA Beta development program?

Well, if you want to install community games then you need XNA. All you have to do is install a few things then open the project and export the build. There are plenty of step by step guides on here.

with the new update there are two games that you get for free that take no effort at all. Later you'll be able to buy them online I presume.

You do not need XNA Game Studio to run the games that have been included with the Zune (Hexic and Texas Hold'Em). XNA Game Studio is a development tool that allows people to write games for the Xbox 360, Windows and of course the Zune. With XNA Game Studio, you are able to deploy games to the device (even those created by others) but if your not comfortable using your Zune for this I would recommend sticking to the inbox games.
