The TERM 'Punk' Is Dead, The MUSIC Is Alive And Kicking
If Billy Talent, Good Charlotte, Hawthorne Heights, My Chemical Romance, and all counterparts fall under the same umbrella as Minor Threat, Bad Brains, and the Descendents, I think it's safe to say the term 'punk' is pretty much useless. Yes, there are some genuine punk band out there nowadays, but even calling them that is pointless, because at this point, who ISN'T considered punk? I mean, honestly, it's criminal. I'm not putting any of these bands down, but I think they are seriously misclassified.

You can be like Henry Rollins and believe punk died when Bad Brains went Rasta...

Hate to break it to ya, but they've been rasta-punk since their debut album.

Also, punk is not dead. What IS dead, is what qualifies music as punk.

Bad Brains debut album came in 1982, but the band formed in 1979, Henry Rollins was referring to the fact that when punk rock was being sold via record or cassette is when it died...hence that when Bad Brains went Rasta (when Paul went pure reggae for several solo albums), punk died...

Crass said Punk is dead and i believe it is.

Yes their are still some "Punk" bands nowadays, but no new punk band can rekindle the flame from when it all started. Its funny to see people say punk is not dead because a majority of those punk bands that actually stuck with their roots are no longer around anymore or they are actually dead.

Punk, in earnest, is not dead.  You try to tell bands like Paint it Black, Dillinger Four, and the No Idea Records roster that punk is dead.  What you're saying, which was reactionary and edgy five years ago MAYBE, is no longer an issue seeing as the vernacular of "emo" has gained popularity.  No one thinks they're punk anymore listening to that bull, they claim to be emo.  It's more accurate at this point to say emo is dead, as in early nineties Dischord bands and the SDRE wave of emo.

But tonight I walk into a place where bar girls fade like tropical birds.

re: The TERM 'Punk' Is Dead, The MUSIC Is Alive And Kicking
Punk as we knew it is dead. Scenes like the hardcore scene is alive and well though. There still tons of bands that have huge followings all over the world. Most cities do have underground scenes that still have the same ideologies about music that they did when the music first came out and will support the bands touring through.

What you are confusing is the mainstream view of punk and the underground view of punk. When punk/hardcore punk fist came out it wasn't ever the bands intentions to get famous or radio play, they just wanted to get together with others that thought critically about what was going on in the world and express views through song. In that case, some traces of punk still exist but more through hardcore these days.

The problem is Mainstream music who want record sales and to make as much profit as possible. They needed to find new ways to market music and they chose punk because there was a market for it that already existed for it. So their lack of imagination simply placed the bands you are talking about under a "punk" umbrella and sold it as such and because people would buy that crap and they will continue to buy more of the same. They are too stupid to notice the difference. Its not punk rockers that labeled the bands your talking about as "punk" it was the greasy record executives that did. Those bands will continue to shut up and and do what they are told to preserve their image. I have no respect for that garbage and refuse to listen to it.
There is still great punk and hardcore out there you just have to find it unfortunately you have to sift through the *** labeled as punk first.

re: The TERM 'Punk' Is Dead, The MUSIC Is Alive And Kicking

I disagree. Just because the *** they play on the radio, or the things filed under punk at your average mall record store are decidedly not punk doesn't mean that punk is a dying breed. True punk is as it used to be: dirty, seedy, and undesirable by the main stream. Go to Thee Parkside or Annie's Social Club in San Francisco most nights of the week and you'll hear it, see it, smell it, and know that it's still around. Our generation is pussified. We want instant gratification. "You mean I have to TRY and find good punk bands? I have to go to shows featuring bands I've never heard of? I have to buy music that might not be available on Zune Marketplace or iTunes??" How the eff do you think things used to be?
