XP/Vista tutorials (w/pics) for Music & Album Art Issues

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

NOTE: It has been suggested by many users on the forum that you disable the "Update Album Information" option under Settings...Collection... You will find it at the bottom of the screen below the file paths for music/videos/pictures/etc.
Do this before you follow the steps below.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you Have Windows XP:
Screen Shot Tutorial is here : http://www.sharingisgood.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=42

If you work better without pictures, here are the steps you need to follow:

1.   Close Zune Software
2.   Open Explorer and browse to c:\Documents and Settings\<your_name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Zune
*** Make sure Hidden Files and Folders are shown. ***
   1.   Open Windows Explorer.
   2.   Goto Tools (up in the menus)
   3.   Goto Folder Options
   4.   Click the Views Tab (in the dialog box that appears).
   5.   Make sure Show Hidden Folders and Files is selected in the list box.
   6.   Click OK.

3.   Find the CurrentDatabase_365.wmdb (that is the 1.0 data store) rename it to CurrentDatabase_365Old.wmdb
4.   Find the ZuneStore.sdf (that is the 2.0 data store) rename it to ZuneStoreOld.sdf
5.   Restart Zune Software, it will find all the media files in your monitored folders and add them to your collection based on the metadata in the files.
6.   Don't use the software until it finishes adding the files.

When you plug your zune back in:
The Zune software will state that your Zune is not associated with your PC.
Go ahead and tell it that it should be associated.
You will have to re-setup your wireless sync also.

*** Make sure Hidden Files and Folders are shown. ***
   1.   Open Windows Explorer.
   2.   Goto Organize (top left of the Explorer Window)
   3.   Goto Folder and Search Options
   4.   Click the Views Tab (in the dialog box that appears).
   5.   Make sure Show Hidden Folders and Files is selected in the list box.
   6.   Click OK.

2.   Open Explorer and browse to C:\Users\{your_username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Zune
3.   Find the CurrentDatabase_365.wmdb (that is the 1.0 data store) rename it to CurrentDatabase_365Old.wmdb
4.   Find the ZuneStore.sdf (that is the 2.0 data store) rename it to ZuneStoreOld.sdf

If your albums are not right on your Zune:

1.   Connect your Zune to your PC.
2.   Goto the Device Tab in the zune software, and remove any albums that are not right.
3.   Go back to the Collection Tab and browse to the albums you just removed.
4.   Right click them and choose "Sync with <<Device Name>>"
5.   Those albums will re-sync to the Zune.

* If this does not work, or every album is not right, you can re-sync your entire collection by wiping the Zune clean.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

If some of your albums (on PC) still do not look right after the fix:

1.   You can use a MP3/WMA tag editor to fix the albums in question.
OR
1.   You can use the Zune software to fix them.
2.   Soft the column that all of the data is correct on, (ie: if Artist is OK, but Album is bad, sort by Artist).
3.   Right click on the part that is wrong on the song, and goto Edit.
4.   You can now edit the name.

How to fix wrong album art: (Contributed by: bitkiller0)

1.  Perform steps 1-4 in StreetChariot's initial post (including disable of "Update Album Information" option under Settings...Collection...)
2.  Navigate to %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Music\Zune
3.  Click on the Search Button
4.  Search for all files and folders named zunealbumart.jpg
5.  Delete all files found within music folders
6.  Resume steps in StreetChariot's initial post at step 5.
7.  Re-enable the "Update Album Information" option under Settings...Collection...
8.  ZuneAlbumArt.jpg files will be regenerated as well.  :)

I haven't verified the album art info, as I didn't have the issue.

Why not just post the guide in this post rather than redirect people to yet another website? Wink [;)]

Microsoft Response (Moved from Page 2 / Moved from First Post)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

READ THIS POST...IT IS YOUR SOLUTION TO MUSIC DATA INCORRECTLY UPGRADED FROM ZUNE 1.0

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for posting your issues. We are working feverishly to make this a better experence for our valued customers that used the 1.0 product.

First we totally respect your time and your music library, everything we did in the product cycle relating to metadata was to keep it high quality in your experience while keeping true to the files. Our entire marketplace and social experience comes alive when we have good metadata for your collections...so it is a very important to us on multiple fronts. While we want to hear your pains and help you get to a better experience and improve the experience for others...please do keep the personal attacks to a minimum. WE LOVE YOU and are doing everything we know how to make this better for you.

Now for the issues you are seeing. We've found a situation isolated to upgrade from 1.X to 2.1. That issue comes at the point that we import your data from the 1.0 database and resulted in multiple tracks for the same music file being added to the collection and the second of the tracks being put into the incorrect album and artist. After much investigation, debuging, attempting to repro and working with our beta community to test the scenario it appeared it would be a very rarely hit issue and if some hit it we would need to support our users through it. We see from the number of users hitting this that that was incorrect. We're working to resolve the upgrade issue for future users upgrades, but getting people back from this state after upgrade proves hard other than rebuilting the library as outlined below. To reiterate...the issue is with the data in the the database only and has not changed the data on your files.

Please follow the steps below to build your library using the metadata in the file rather than the 1.0 data store:

   Close Zune.exe

Open (for Vista) C:\user\{your_username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Zune or c:\documents and settings\<you>\local settings\application data\Microsoft\Zune the equivelent on XP

Find the CurrentDatabase_365.wmdb (that is the 1.0 data store) rename it to CurrentDatabase_365Old.wmdb

Find the ZuneStore.sdf (that is the 2.0 data store) rename it to ZuneStoreOld.sdf

Restart Zune.exe, it will find all the media files in your monitored folders and add them to your collection based on the metadata in the files.

You should only need to do this once. Please reply in this forum...if you have success or not with these steps so that we can continue to help you through your upgrade.

If after this is done you are still seeing issues with your metadata, you are looking at a seperate issue than the 1.0 data migration issue. We need you to look at your files to confirm they are correct:

Please use windows explorer to open the folder the files are in and right click properties for a song you believe is incorrectly grouped. Look specifically at the Album Artist and Album Title to confirm they are what you expect them to be. If they are not what you expect you are working with a file metadata issue. You can change the metadata for the file and Zune using the list view, right clicking and choosing edit. Right clicking on the column header will allow you to view Album Artist, Track Artist, Album Title, and track Title...so that you can edit them as well.

re: STICKY: Guide for fixing your music library for those having issues.

Deleteing the .sdf file sill leaves me with mixed up album art and metadata within Zune V2, while everything looks fine in Explorer.  This isn't a full fix (though it may work for some).

This is only for windows VISTA, the folder layout is different for windows XP, is there anyone who could post a similar tutorial for us?

re: STICKY: Guide for fixing your music library for those having issues.

The folder in XP should be:

C:\Documents and Settings\(((USERNAME)))\Application Data\Microsoft\Zune\

Let me know if that works. I don't have XP anymore, but if memory serves me right, that should be it.
If all else fails, search for ZuneStore.sdf.

To those with issues with album art, it may have been caused by having "Update Album Information" checked when the database was confused. Try fixing those issues manually with Mp3tag after you delete the ZuneStore.sdf file and you should be on your way. I had about 5 albums I had to do this to, since I didn't catch the "Update Album Information" option at the beginning. You can find it in the settings menu.

Thanks,
-StreetChariot

The path above is slightly wrong. On XP, the ZuneStore.sdf file resides in %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Zune. If you are still having trouble, try renaming the file CurrentDatabase_365.wmdb along with the ZuneStore.sdf file and restarting the Zune client. Rename them to anything - better than deleting as you can get them back if need be :)

Already tried.  Fixed some, but not nearly all issues.   And the metadata for the corrupted songs is all correct.
