African artists
I adore African rhythms, and would love to expand my knowledge of African music. Some of my long-time favorites are Youssou N'Dour ( Senegalese vocalist with a huge catalog of excellent music), Geoffrey Oryema (preternaturally gorgeous music from Uganda-born musician) and Angelique Kidjo (High energy, high quality grooves from Benin-born goddess).  Does anyone who loves those artists have any recommendations for me? These guys have been around for decades...what's coming out of Africa now that I need to hear?

Thanks! Big Smile [:D]

I'll keep an eye out for those. That looks like an amazing label. Not too many music stores left here in the wilds of Alabama, but I'll make a point to head for the bargain bins the next time I visit the big city. Wink [;)]

All wonderful stuff, perhaps my favourite is Amadou & Miriam's "Dimanche á Bamako".

re: African artists
This is all classical african music. It's like saying Frank Sinatra represents American Music.
Currently Africa puts out a lot of cool hip-hop. Check Positive Black Soul and Skwatta Kamp.

I havent had a lot of experience with their electronic/dance stuff.. but it gets as diverse as anywhere.. for instance Playdoe puts out old school electro (80s mostly american hip hop that was heavily electronic) mixed over dance/electronic music.

Zap Mama is from Belgian but with strong Congolese influence, i forget what they call the diaspora of certain Africans living in Belgium, there is oen though. The music is R&B and African sounding, she's on the Lauka Bop label, the one David Byrne.. the genisu of the Talking Heads started when he got into world music.
