re: how to speed up software tips
Why, because it reads stuff off of your hard drive, which has nothing to do with the speed of your processor or RAM

Only way to speed it up substantially is to get an SSD

Thanks. It makes a lot more sense now and also kills my hope of the software running faster

well, I don't know what your issue is...but this advice is only somewhat valid.   Yes, SSDs are faster than traditional hard disks, but that would hardly be noticeable unless your drive was reading or writing a LOT of data AND you had minimal DRAM.  So, let's see if anything improves with the 4.0 update next week.

its actually worst now. the maketplace is 10 times slower, and when a download is pending, it literally takes longer for it to get started. i like the changes in 4.0, but as of speed, its worst than ever...

I never had issues with the software before however 4.0 is really slow.  I made a post here: http://forums.zune.net/522261/ShowPost.aspx

This has got to be some type of issue that will hopefully get resolved.  I haven't viewed the marketplace in about 3-4 days because it's so slow to load.

re: how to speed up software tips
I'm posting this in various locations that are talking about slowness with software/marketplace, because I just managed to fix all of my problems with a simple change:

I just made the smallest change to my computer and all of a sudden the software/marketplace saw an INCREDIBLE improvement. Usually when downloading from the marketplace, the software was unusable. However, after changing my storage location (An SD card) from FAT32 to NTFS it is at least 10 times faster. Incredible. I highly suggest people give this a try if they are using FAT32 for their storage media

[snipped] Let's face it the Zune software is a system resource hog. Even people with awesome pc specs have reported the cpu maxing out. Although I'll gladly live with it because it's an absolutely fantastic software program so kudos to the Zune team.
Many reporting that problem find it to be one of two things:
1) videos converting in the background.  If so, the 'hogginess' will go away when complete, or set it not to do this in background.
2) As in the original post, the Zune software display setting is too high- either for the CPU or the graphics card installed.  back this down closer to basic.   This one is very common.

How do you back down the display settings in zune software?

Fix for the Marketplace slowness in  4.0 (Win7) see the post below by bazztrap

http://forums.zune.net/0/9/528010/ShowPost.aspx#528010

It worked for me, I think this post should be tagged or something if it's a known issue.

I agree with the last post. Changing IE's LAN settings speeds up Marketplace significantly.
