re: Zune 3.0 - Device not recognized by Zune software (non-driver issues)
I've been through so many troubleshooting steps, but this is the one that actually worked (and I didn't see it on the troubleshooting pages) - re-enabling the "Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity" service.  Who would have thought that Zune and WM2003 were related?  Thanks SkipDeez (and JuiceKillr42 for relaying!)

re: Zune 3.0 - Device not recognized by Zune software (non-driver issues)

Device type?  Zune 8

Operating system? XP

Specific issue you are having?  Device not recognized by software.  Plugging the device into the computer with the USB actually opens the software, but once the software is opened, it doesn't recognize the device.

Exact steps you took before the issue occurred?  It has worked fine up to now so there was no need to take any steps.

Things you have tried to fix the issue?  Tried different USB port.  Restarted software, multiple times.  Replugged device, multiple times.  Rebooted system, one time.  Did re-start on Zune, couple of times.  Checked for driver problem, no indication of driver error.

Did this work prior to the 3.0 release?  Yes and it has worked since the 3.0 release.  Just started this today.

re: Zune 3.0 - Device not recognized by Zune software (non-driver issues)

Device type? 30G first generation

Operating system? Windows XP

Specific issue you are having? pc will not recognize the zune so that I can sync. When I plug it in, it only charges. This just happened recently. I think I just synced something like a week or two ago.

Exact steps you took before the issue occurred? I updated to a 3.1 Version

Things you have tried to fix the issue? Pretty much everything. I rebooted the Zune. Restarted the PC. Tried a different USB port. Tried a different cable. I checked the Device Manager, scanned for changes, the Zune has a yellow (!) next to it. So I right clicked on that and hit properties and it says "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)" So after that I searched for driver/program updates, inserted the cd, said there were no updates. I have not uninstalled and reinstalled yet because I'm afraid I might not be able to reinstall and use the software again. I've read all the other messages in this forum and even though it really sucks that this is happening to a whole lot of other people, I'm glad I'm not alone. I really really hope that microsoft will fix this problem soon. On a good note, the Zune still charges and works fine, the software will still play my music. It just wont sync or be recognized.

Ya know....if Bill Gates has the time to get a bunch of mosquitos together and set them off into a crowd to prove a point about malaria....I think he has the time to help us all out and fix this big problem and take care of his customers.

Did this work prior to the 3.0 release? My Zune worked great before that. The only problem I had was the 30G New Years glitch.

re: Zune 3.0 - Device not recognized by Zune software (non-driver issues)

100% fixed guys

!!!!!!!

after hours upon hours and reloading all of my music and the zune firmware and the zune software and doing all the so called work arounds on this site all to no help!

used another cable, used another zune, used another computer (which worked so i know it was NOT a hardware issue) i finally searched high and low online and come to find out;

USB driver details read

:\windows\system32\drivers\libusb0.sys
C:\windows\system32\drivers\wpdusb.sys
C:\windows\system32\drivers\wufrd.sys

ok, so the bottom two look legit however the top one does not look microsoft.

after searching what might have installed this onto my comp i found that i had loaded a program called "Lib32-win32" in order to play HALO with my PS3 controller through a USB connection.

simple uninstall and it is fixed. working perfect and re-downloading all of my music.

it seems that some of these work arounds worked for some people and some did not like me. I hope this helps atleast one person on here to get their music back, i know it han be hard lol

re: Zune 3.0 - Device not recognized by Zune software (non-driver issues)

Device type:2nd Gen. 80 gig.

Operating system: Windows Vista Home

Specific issue you are having: When USB is plugged into device and PC I can only charge the system. Computer reconises the device, but Zune software does not.

Exact steps you took before the issue occurred:Nothing unusual

Things you have tried to fix the issue:Fully system reboot, Zune Reboot.(disconnected from system) Altered collection folder, re installed Microsoft's device management software and rebooted

Did this work prior to the 3.0 release:I never had an issue with the software before this

Honestly, it appears that people have been having this issue for some time and Microsoft's support team is not being of any help, and it appears that no real software updates are on the way to solve this. I only got Vista because I can not run Zune software on Linux Ubuntu, now with this issue, if a fix does not accure I might as well sell my 80 gig and my 8g and buy a 120 Ipod and fully run Ubuntu and say peace out to Microsoft.

If any one has any other forms of fixing this issue, please let me know or if anyone finds out word of an upate that would be amazing.

I can't even access whats on my device in order to delete it to buy an Ipod...

re: Zune 3.0 - Device not recognized by Zune software (non-driver issues)
I have a 30gb zune that is no longer recognized by the software, and I have vista home premium.  I have done everything suggested in this thread and nothing has worked.  I also uninstalled/reinstalled the software... which just created more issues.  After I reinstalled the software, I discovered that my zune would no longer connect to the computer and there was a driver error.  I restored to yesterday and the zune went back to connecting to my pc with no issues, but it's still not being recognized by the software.  It'll just say "preparing to sync" for a while and will either lose the connection, or will say "sync complete".

I havent been able to update the firmware since it wont conect with the software.  Is there a way to update the firmware without being connected to the software?  Do I even need to update the firmware?

I had a similar problem with my z30 find the error code in your device manager to narrow down the problem.

re: Zune 3.0 - (workaround) Device not recognized by Zune software (non-driver issues)
OH MY STARS! Thank you! THANK YOU! After almost a YEAR of not being able to sync my zune, the solution was this simple. My gratitude is immeasurable!

Here's a manual workaround for the problem that worked for me...

With Zune device *disconnected*, run Zune software as Administrator (right-click, "run as Administrator").  Then plug in Zune.

Background:

My system is Windows 7 beta, but Zune was syncing OK for a few times after I upgraded Vista --> Win7.  Then it mysteriously stopped.

Symptom is: In Zune software, device icon not highlighted at all (I was *not* seeing a yellow warning icon next to device, it was not seeing the device at all).  But in Device Manager, Zune device showed up (under Portable Devices) looking perfectly OK.  I had tried Uninstalling the device and letting PnP reinstall it a few times, but that hadn't helped.  I had also rebooted the Zune device itself, also no help.
