Do you use the headphone jack or does it play through the USB?

The dock on the front connects to the bottom of your Zune and the audio is routed from there to the speakers.  The USB cable provides syncing capability with your PC but doesn't carry any of the audio on it that I'm aware of.  The M604 also comes with it's own A/C adapter so you can recharge your Zune while it's in the dock as well.  There is a headphone jack on the back of the speakers along with an Aux In (For non-Zune players to jack in via their headphone jacks) and a Composite Video out jack.

Altec Lansing player won't work with Zune's new Firmware

The ZUNE player charges but it won't play.  I've used it on the Altec Lansing player without a hitch every day for the past several months.  After updating the firmware this morning, it will no longer play by just sitting in the dock.

I called Microsoft, they couldn't help and said I had to call Altec.

I called Altec and they said they had been receiving calls about this issue and I had to call Microsoft!

My 30 gig with the new firmware works with mine...

I hope this is true. I have ordered the 80 and on the Zune website it said that it was only compatible with the 30. I have not received the 80 yet, but I was going to be really upset if I had to buy another speaker dock. I love this one and don't want to spend another $100+ to get another one!

OKAY. here's the fix...make sure your Zune is off before plugging it onto the sound dock. not paused... but off, as in hold down the play button until the screen fades off... and then plug it in.

the zune remote doesent work with the dock, but the remote that came with the dock works

I ordered this item for $50 from buy.com last week and received it a week later.  I would recommend this speaker dock to anyone with a zune.  I own the new Zune 80 btw.   The sound is great.  The bass and treble is adjustable and great.  It gets loud.  Its small and compact but gets the job done.  The remote is an awesome feature that works well too.  The only thing I wish it had is a battery option to use it outdoors.  But this is a great item.  I love my new toy.

re: Altec Lansing M604

I'm so glad I read this tonight!  I just received my new 80GB Zune today and I also orderd the Altec system.  Unfortunately, my Altec system is not working (the power box chirps when it is plugged in and the system won't turn on) so I am returning the Altec system.  I was trying to decide if I was going to request a shipment of a new one or just get a refund, so reading all of your comments really helped!  I'm going to ask them to ship me a new system and see how it goes!

I do have a question though for those of you who have a working system - do you really have to follow the set up steps every single time you use the Altec system?  Meaning, do you really have to unplug the system from the wall and then from the unit each time before you use it and plug it all in step by step to get it to work properly?  That seems kind of odd, but my directions saya that is what it takes to get the system working.  Since the system is wall mountable, it doesn't make sense that I would have to remove it from the wall in order to unplug and plug it in each time.  Any ideas?  I guess maybe it will be worth it if the sound is good...but sounds like a pain!

I've posted this elsewhere, but has anyone been able to compare the M604 to the newer im414?  I can't find a review of the new speaker dock anywhere . . .

I found what appears to be a decent comparison:

MyJules,

How well does the Zune 80 fit in the dock once you remove the plastic mold?  Is it still a relatively tight connection?  And does removing the mold actually mean you have to break the plastic, or is it meant to come out?
