I think I might have found a root cause for the memory leak. Any files that fail to sync are not being removed from memory. So, the memory use only rises when a file fails to sync. For example, I had a lot of files with the C00D27E1 error early in the sync queue. When I removed those files from the library the sync was successful, up until the next set of files with that error came up in the queue. But, I was able to get through about 400 songs till that happened, and memory use didn't go above 105MB. After the Zune team fixes this memory leak error, it'd be nice if they could add a function in the software that would let you replace ZunePass albums that are no longer available with alternative albums that have the same songs, or if you'd just work out better licensing agreements so this doesn't happen. I realize the 10 free songs a month is probably meant to help alleviate this, but sometimes you have more than 10 tracks that come off license in a month. Also, if you would provide a monthly or weekly reminder of which albums were coming off license, we'd be able to choose which songs or albums we wanted to buy to keep, or which to let go.
Just to follow up here, we have root caused the memory leak issue. It's not a Zune software problem, but rather an issue with the Win7 RC build. I brought the issue to the Win7 team and they have fixed the problem in Win7 builds >7131. I'm not sure that they are going to send out a patch, so we may have to wait for an RC2 (if there is one) or the RTM release.
Agreed we can do better with messaging changes to the catalog, but sadly the record labels control that and it's difficult for us to know when this is going to happen and to what content. We'll see what we can do to make this experience better in the future.
