Umm...it's hard to think back into the Dark Ages of my music-buying life, haha, I really can't remember any CD before Smash Mouth's Astro Lounge.  Of course, I bought the CD at the time because I was young and still under the impression that I would fit in if I bought the same music as everyone else, plus All Star was an awesome song.  I still listen to the CD on occasion.

Things are not as bad as they seem. They are worse than that. They are also better than that.

Most people aren't really aware of the Kiwi (New Zealand) music scene, even though Split Enz supposedly achieved worldwide success. For some of the best music the world has to offer, check below down under. My favorite album to this day is Elemeno P's Trouble In Paradise, and it is still one of my top albums to this day. My #1 favorite song of all time is the opening track, You Are, and still is.

Iron Butterfly's "Inagaddadavida" .. I was seven years old when I got it in 1968! I bought it after a college aged friend of the family said it was the ultimate homework music. This was at a time when my parents listened to Neil Diamond, and my older brother listened to The Beatles. My mother hates the title track to this day with a loathing usually reserved for evil dictators and Bush Republicans.

I think the first tape I ever bought was Twisted Sister's "Stay Hungry".  I still like the couple of videos from that album....Devil [6]

Oh my... I had a collection of 45's, albums, 8-tracks, that my parents bought me = Elvis, Donny Osmond, The Osmonds, Motown, Bob Seger... I listen to everything. Even still have a 45 of John Travolta singing Let Her In. Yeah... so anyway...

The very first album I bought with my very OWN money was Journey - Infinity.

Feeling That Way fading right into Anytime, that was the COOL!  Cool [H]

i have to guess on this one as it was probably a cassette tape - "Faith" - George Michael (there were about 4 singles that made me buy it)

First album i remember being given - Wham! - Music from the Edge of Heaven

First CD: "Rush Street" - Richard Marx

re: Whats the 1st album you ever bought and what song made you buy it?

I had a nice collection of disco 45s when I was really little. (I loved KC and the Sunshine Band and the Village People).

My first cassette tape purchase was cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual.  I really liked Girls Just Want to Have Fun.  :)

My first CD.  Radiohead, I think it was their first album the one with Creep on it.

re: Whats the 1st album you ever bought and what song made you buy it?
Here's a story...

I remember being about 7 years-old.  It was 1998, in the summer.  Piling into the car with my dad, mother, and brother to head over to Bay Terrace to do some shopping was a pretty big deal--it was a day spent out, at least in my 7 year-old mind.  We also stopped by the music store, called "The Wall".  This wasn't long before The Wall's parent company was purchased by another company.  To make a long story short, The Wall music stores became part of the F.Y.E. chain. Sadly, these stores have nothing on The Wall--perhaps it's just my nostalgia.  This was always a fun time for me.  Even at 7, I was infatuated with music.  I'd get a CD for one song and then play it until it wouldn't play anymore. At this particular instance in 1998, I picked up a copy of Fastball's "All The Pain Money Can Buy".  I do believe it was the first album I ever purchased.

The darling on this album was "The Way", a song I'd consider a 90's classic, about singer Tony Scalzo's romanticized version of what happened to an elderly couple who went missing.  They were eventually found dead in a ravine, the result of a car accident, but in this case, he imagined them running off to have fun, as they had done when they were young.  I played that CD to death.  I still own it and there's  extensive and extreme scratches on the disc.  I still listen to the album and, for me, it's a ride down recollection road.

This CD has a lot of sentiment for me.  It reminds me of a completely different time in my life--a good one that I miss.  Yet, I can listen to that song, "The Way", and like Scalzo's inspiration, I can feel more optimistic, even about a pretty crappy situation.  I feel that downloading really takes something away from the experience of music.  Back then, buying a CD was a special occasion.  Now, it's just another 13 songs you download along with 10,000 others.
