Thanks to those of you who tried the clearing local cache stuff for us; that narrows down the problem. We're still looking at it. We know the problem is related to your machine or possibly your ISP somehow (because when we view your friends in the software, we do see all of them - it's just that they're not showing up on your own machine).
Anyway, still trying to understand this; it appears that everything in our control is working as we expect it to, which means we're now wondering whether the people experiencing this problem use a particular ISP or are from a particular region of the country? (For example, if you're all from the northeast, it's possible that our caching system has a problem with the servers that handle the northeast, etc)
