holy crap man, the Zune DEVICE itself has about a 500 MHz processor......

Zune 4 for me is doing Cpu spikes every 10-15 seconds or so as well

I only have some 5000 songs added to it.

Even when just minimized and not even playing anything.

As many people have said i think its just doing some management and gathering info procedures, but this should be more transparent to users and not seem so ambiguous so as to cause an alarm.

Hope MS addresses this issue.

System is more than enough to support it.

Win 7 32-bit

Core 2 duo 3.16ghz

4gb ram

9800 GTX+

That's kinda weird...
have a 2.1 GHz core 2 duo T6500, 4 GB RAM, when idle my Zune software is at 0% processor usage 95 percent of the time
the highest I see it go is 8 percent ....

switching from collection to quickplay or videos makes it spike to about 15 percent
playing a song, I hit around 3-7 percent usage

This is on lowest settings, as I haven't seen the use for premium graphics on a media player

seriously, firefox consumes more processor usage and memory than my Zune software

re: Zune Software v.4 is Killing my Processor!
I think I may have found out what my problem is with using ZuneV.4 software. When ever I ran Zune it tends to keep pausing and forcing all other programs to pause. While using it I had my Task manager up and I was noticing that my CPU would never go over 25% usage and my ram would never go over 1.25 Gigs of usage. So my only conclusion is that the Zune Software doesn't do a very good job in caching information on ram or it does not use a file system like XML to store history and file list. It gets all the data from the Hard drive itself. I have a slow hard drive. 54,000 RPM this would cause alot more delays then a hard drive whos speed is 72,000 rpm. There is really nothing I can do to optimize for this short coming. I have tried [ cleaned out registry, defragged, cleared out software I no longer use, Slimmed down Start up scripts, cleared out temp files ect. ] I guess once I get a new laptop I'll have to get a 72,000 rpm HDD [with windows 7 ofcourse] and test things out there. Still have to wait till October for a new laptop thou. Hope that helps people and Microsoft find a solution for their issues.

Its 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm

BTW whats the official line from MS,surely enough people have had a run-in with this issue,to warrant a mention.

I don't think there will be an "official line"- the vast majority of people with the problem seem to be running it on ancient hardware.

I have Vista with 3 gigs of ram 32 bit version and I decided to listen to some music after loading the new software for the new Zune HD. I have not had any problems downloading any music, podcast, or apps but have noticed that my processors are working in over drive. Please fix this issue microsoft I dont want to have to buy a new computer only because I'm running your software.

send me the money, i meet the requirements.  i've already shelled out more $$ in time and effort making this thing work than any 4 ums devices.

telling ppl to spend more $$ is not the solution!  -- for me its all about the converter that shouldn't be needing to convert already used on 3.0 vids

re: Zune Software v.4 is Killing my Processor!
I've been having this same problem, but my specs shouldn't be a part of it.  I've got a beefy 2.4ghz core 2 duo and 3.5 gigs of ram.  Yet my Zune software is constantly chewing up 30-50% of my CPU.  Its crippling my computer.
And it hasn't just "gone away".  This has been happening for almost a week straight.  I've only got around 8000 songs on there, so I'd think it would have made it through whatever process it was running by now.

Here's hoping for a quick 4.1 patch release.

I had this same issue and I figured out the problem.  My External Hard-Drive was using the FAT32 File system,  I converted it to NTSF using the convert command and this fixed everything.

All you have to do is to take advantage of the command line Convert utility. Click on the Start sphere, and then in the Start Menu search box simply enter “cmd” and hit enter. Once you have decided which partition to switch from FAT32 to NTFS then write “convert : /fs:ntfs”. For example, if I were to convert E:/ from Fat32 to NTFS then I would simply enter “convert e: /fs:ntfs.” Additionally, there is the old handy “convert /?” command that will bring up information on how to manage the conversion.

This will not delete the data on the drive.

Sadly my hardrive's file system is already set to NTFS.

re: Zune Software v.4 is Killing my Processor!

Who sez that MS didn't promise the hardware manufacturers that they would create hardware sales by creating software that refuses to run on existing systems!

Well obviously it isn't all about whimpy systems, check this post: http://forums.zune.net/0/1/523623/ShowPost.aspx#523623 "

Skipping/Halting Video on Zune 4.0

"Ever since I installed the Zune 4.0 software my videos seems to skip, halt, etc.  It never did this with the previous version.  Very annoying. I can't watch anything.

Running on Vista 64-bit, 2.1 Quad Core, with 6GB ram, so it's not my machine.

MS needed to do more QA testing on this software."

Quit bagering those of us with "lesser" hardware.  Do you need to buy a new engine for your car just because you got a new radio?  I think not.

When I go to the "Now Playing screen I notice that the process "explorer.exe" starts using 70% of the processor, is that whimpy hardware or ineficient programming?  Quit being a "Fan Boy" and co-signing bad coding.  There are enough legitimate complaints here to warrant a review of the current state of Zune 4.0 and a fix is deffinately needed.  I suggest a "roll back" option be included in every new release.

I overheard this statement in a conversation about Zune 4.0: When I want to get screwed I will ask for it otherwise it is RAPE!
