re: FLAC support
I think FLAC support in the dekstop software would be useful for people, however I suspect the majority of people DON'T have FLAC audio.

Playing FLAC on the device seems to be overkill to me though (apart from the serious drain on power it would be on a HDD based system, or the space on a SSD based system).

Noisy office / public transport / parks are not the place to appreciate the additional quality of lossless audio, even with pricey cans. If you are listening at home i'd think play it from the PC / home network.

There should be way more support for other formats.  Personally I don't really care about flac... I use flac exclusively for backup and storage on other media, but I would love ogg support!

The thing is that the Creative ZEN supports all of this. Not to mention the video support.  I really don't understand why M$ so stubbornly sticks to its own proprietary formats, refusing to play anything else.  I really do love the Zune itself as an MP3 player, but it seems to me that with minimal effort it could be 10X better by making a few small changes like those mentioned above and with file browsing support (mentioned elsewhere on these forums).

And is In Graphite right in saying that WMA actually has a lossless format?  I always thought it was exclusively lossy...

ANARCHY! ... hehe :)  But, then what would windows media player do...?
...but... ... who's to say I want a media software at all? What if I would prefer being able to do all of that in windows explorer? IE would of course merge in together to make it "online accessible" :p ... Is there really not enough code written over the past DECADES... that we cant merge it all in one?    .... just that people would make less moneyz.

re: FLAC support

I too support the ideal of FLAC being support via Zune. I know it would do Zune ALOT of sales should Microsoft release FLAC support. I have this feeling that it's the studios that are holding MS back from releasing FLAC support. It's not hard to wonder why...

Noneless, I've grown used to WMA Lossless. The file footprints are smaller and it works on every Windows PC. The ideal of "freedom" of FLAC is nice and all, but it's futile in the end, imo. The overall problem with playing Lossless is the fact that battery performance does take a hit.

That only makes sense if we are talking about *selling* music in FLAC format, but we aren't. They might not release lossless music very often (for various unrelated reasons), but that doesn't mean they want to prevent FLAC from playing on a device or media player period. Hate record companies all you want but they don't do things without a motivation.

The reasons formats like FLAC are not present on a mainstream player are technical, not due to pressures from the recording industry. I think there are legitimate reasons for not including it in the player, but the software is much more viable for supporting FLAC and other formats as well, such as OGG. Being able to play these formats could benefit many users by eliminating the need for other software.

re: FLAC support
Considering that you only really find FLAC on private torrent portals, yea, I still think it's the studios holding MS back. iRiver and Creative do not have music catalogs, they have nothing to lose. MS has to deal with the labels to offer onto the Zune Marketplace and they'll play song and dance with the labels to please them.

re: FLAC support
I definitely agree. Flac should be supported it is open source and open source is the future. no one really uses wma format or the apple one but recently there as been a lot of Flac buzz because of its licensing. MP3 is really good enough quality at 320Kbps but some professional DJs rip vinyls in flac for superior quality so there is some demand out there for flack players because i was looking for one but at the time they didnt have large enough hard drives to be worth it  if it was supported these 120 gig hard drives could actually be used.

re: FLAC support
Add me to the list of FLAC supporters. Apple's closed-door, proprietary format mindset is what's turned me off from their players. Lack of FLAC support on the Zune HD prevents it from being a day one purchase for me.

re: FLAC support

I've had the pleasure of using the old software that could be persuaded to convert every file that could be played by the WMP by just changing a few registry keys. I know that a mobile player uses more resources if you just fill it up with codecs. But if I want to play every file, I have to convert it. Thanks to Badaboom, I don't have to wait too long anymore. It's still annoying that we have to convert our files to even play them on our Zune Software not even talking about converting them to the Zune.

MS: Please bring back codec support for our Zune Software!
