Some kind of Lost or Stolen tracking system PLEASE??
Well, I am happy to say that I am now done with the portable mp3 player. I am happy with the new phones that have come out with the mp3 players in them. I just got the Samsung Instinct a couple of days ago, and am very satisfied. Whats better than having your phone, planner, and mp3 player all in one device? Security for that device! At least with my phone I know there is some sort of way to track it down, and if and when that fails you can have them disable the phone! I then have the satisfaction of knowing that the piece of scum theif that stole my phone can no longer get enjoyment from my stolen property. Not only am I happy knowing the fact that they are not able to use my device, but that I am able to pay just $50 and get a replacement. I no longer have to go back to the store and fork out another $250 for the 80G Zune. The down side is less memory, but I can deal with that. I think the era of the portable mp3 player is coming to an end. Why would people want to carry around two devices, their phone and mp3 player, when there are devices that can play music, surf the web, and call family and friends. I learned a hard lesson by having my Zune stolen, but I did not have to learn it twice. There obviously is no security feature coming for the Zune any time soon, so I would have been risking another loss. With my new phone I have not only lessened my burden of multiple devices, but got the piece of mind that a low life criminal can not get the wonderful benefits of my new investment.

Microsoft should make it to where the thief would have no clue that they're being tracked at all. Then the police that come would be in "plain clothes" asking for something. Then they bring out the badge once they get inside, and ask about the stolen Zune. Not all of the policemen will have the time to do it, but it'll help a few people get their Zunes back.

More often than not, the police have better things to do than this. Ideally, the "covert" idea is better. But for all practical purposes, locking it out would probably do the most good. I am actually surprised Microsoft doesn't already have a system like this, considering the similarity of many of these ideas to thei pre-existing "Windows Genuine" security.

I just spoke with the whomevers at ZUNE and they said they would put a note on my account that if it was re-registered it would be investigated throuht thier legal dept. and than decide if they would notify me or not.  What kind of **** is that. Shouldn't I be notified first and shouldn't I be able to turn in the re-registered info to the police to help with my already submitted B&E report??????????? I hate this crap. Microsoft is capable of better systems.  I bought the ZUNE after loosing (or stolen whatever happened) to 2 IPODs so I got my son this ZUNE because I Thought MS was better.hahahahahaha

You assume that you should have so many rights that are not yours to have. Seems like you have an issue taking care of your things, instead of placing the blame elsewhere just try to keep better care of your stuff.

If someone were to re-register your Zune, you would have no right to that information, and only Microsoft could turn it into the police, simple as that.

I would like to see this added as well. All you have to do is electronically read the internal Zune ID when connected and allow it to connect or not!

Hmmm, I thought of something. You should be able to have the choice of password-protecting the software. Where you have to enter the password to sync. Which means, we should have to press a button to sync before the Zune actually starts syncing.

Then the thief would either just delete the software and reinstall it, throw the Zune away, or sell it, either way it doesn't help anyone get their lost/stolen Zunes back.

No, the password would be linked to the Zune. Even if you don't get it back, you know that they won't have the benefit of enjoying your Zune, or accessing your personal photos.

If they were to delete the software (that is on the Zune device) and reinstall then they would assign a new password (it's called "starting from scratch"). Who cares if they have the benefit of using it or not, what matters is that the Zune is gone, and people are wanting to set up something to help get it back.

I just don't want them having the benefit of enjoying the Zune. And I'm sure the people who make the software/device can change that. Your password should stay on the Zune. I just came up with a simple idea that can be used and changed into something better. Just think of the idea itself and make it better instead of trashing the idea entirely.
