re: Streaming to 360 from Zune 4.0
I haven't tried anything new to fix my issue (the 360 can "see" Zune's tracks which are stored on my Windows Home Server), but once in a while the problem will fix itself for a short time. It takes a long while for any of the lists on the 360 (Album, Artist, etc) to populate. Once it does, sometimes one of my MP3s will play. After that one, none will play. It is pretty strange.

For WHS users, I think it would be great it that team could add functionality the way they did for Windows Media Center. Somehow hook Zune into the WHS without having to install Zune on it (which is possible, but unsupported). That way I could play my Zune Pass music directly from the server.

i've been having the same problem as everyone here. I right clicked zune and did "run as administrator" and then configured my x360 settings in the zune software and it began working properly!!!!

I'm having a similar issue as well...I tried running the Zune software as administrator, and I can now see the named media collection on my 360 that's supposed to be shared, but it only shows the songs that are stored on a local hard drive. All the media I have on my Windows Home Server network share doesn't show up at all (though it shows up and plays fine in the actual Zune software).

It worked fine before 4.0, so did the network share stuff get broken during the update?

I might have the solution to your problem, The Zune software has it's designated folders where it streams the music files into itself from so you can play them through Zune or sync them to your device.  I was experiencing a problem where the music showed up in my Zune library but didn't show up on my Xbox 360.  This was because it wasn't in one of the folders designated for this.  I just dragged it in from a random folder.  It will play in the Zune software on your computer, but won't show up on your Xbox 360 if you do this.  New folders can be added to the list of designated ones if you don't want to combine your whole collection into one folder.

Not really sure isn't it just one or the other as in using Zune Soft to share or WMP11. Not at the same time? Don't know. I don't really like the Zune software as the media share because it doesn't play that many codecs versus the WMP11 as a network share.

Hi,

With Zune 3.x on Vista I had to start the software using the "Run as administrator" to configure the software to enable sharing with the Xbox 360; after the sharing option was configured I could start the Zune software as usual and I was able to stream music/videos/pictures. My Xbox used to be wireless and my desktop wired, now the Xbox is using a powerline connection and my desktop is still wired.

I upgraded my Zune 3.x to 4.0 and streaming still works.

I hope this helps.

You are the man Darth!!! Been trying to figure this crap out for ages....Couldn't understand why my music was sharing but not pics or video. Turns out music is the only one that I was sharing before update so even when I ticked the video and picture boxes they weren't registering because it wasn't running in admin mode.  Glad somebody figured this crap out...

re: Streaming to 360 from Zune 4.0

btw, for those of you that are sharing content from a WHS or other mapped drive, consider this change:

The Zune software uses Zune Network Sharing Service (Zune NSS) to share media. Zune NSS runs under the Network Service account rather than your user account. Therefore, the remote network share may not allow Zune NSS to access the files.

To fix this problem, modify Zune NSS to run under your user account, which will give it the same access you have to the network share.

This change is not recommended if multiple user accounts on the same computer are sharing media from the Zune software, because there is only one Zune NSS for all users on a computer.

Change Zune NSS access

  1. On your computer, click Control Panel,Administrative Tools, Services. If you are running Windows Vista, you can see Administrative Tools in the Classic View of Control Panel.
  2. Right-click Zune Network Sharing Service, then click Properties.
  3. Click the Log On tab, then type your user name and password in the boxes.
  4. Restart the service.
