re: Zune 80 - Software update failed, now bricked.
Ok, now I see that the Zune is only showing up as 1GB.  I have read that a lot of other people are having the same problem, yet no one has come to any resolution.

Anyone know what's up?

re: Zune 80 - Software update failed, now bricked.
I plugged mine in today (Zune 80) and it suggested I update my software so I told it to go ahead.  It got to 3 out of 4 before it stopped doing anything.  It said it would take about 5 minutes, but I left it there for an hour and it never moved.  Now all I get is the backlight.  No picture/logo/anything.  Just the backlight.  It says it is connected to the computer, and I can see it and it says it is adding things to my zune, but it doesnt show the connected image on the zune screen, and when I unplug it from the computer it doesnt show anything.  Where did my screen go?  What can I do about this?  I tried restarting it, and I still only get backlight.  I moved to europe recently and can't easily call them.  So is there anything else that can be done?  Is my zune a goner?  Is there some other reason the screen might have gone away?  Something else to try to fix it?  It was working 10 minutes before I plugged it in.

re: Zune 80 - Software update failed, now bricked.
hey i had the same problems everyone else is having.my zune stopped working after updating the new software so i had tried: restarting, that didn't work so i cleared it, and when updating from there it said i didn't have enough space on my zune, tried that a few more times, sometimes it would just get to step 2 sometimes to step 3. so i just let the battery die completely so that when you push a button not even a low battery signal comes up. then i plugged it back in let it charge for a bit and then updated it since i had cleared it. and now it works fine. no problems with the update no problems with syncing. all the problems i had before are now fixed. so my advice to everyone is to just let it die completly because that worked for me when nothing else did.

I have let it go entirely 'dead' several times.  I am still unable to update the Zune because it is 'out of space'.  Lies!  =(

Yeah, unfortunately, I let it drain out for a few days, and I still got the same issue...

re: Zune 80 - Software update failed, now bricked.
I just posted this is another thread at the top referring to the 3.2 update. Here it is again.

~*~

When I tried to update my Zune 80 last night - it froze midway through on step 3. Stayed on step 3 for 20+ minutes ... maybe 30+.

When I attempted to cancel the update, I couldn't ... so when I attempted to shut down the update - it told me that if I did, my Zune could potentially stop working. I let it sit for a few more minutes, without change, and again tried to cancel the update without luck - and so decided to take the risk and shut down the program.

Upon shutting it down, the Zune immediately stopped working. I couldn't turn it on or anything. So, I did what I could last night to do some research in regards to doing a system-restore on the device.

I found what I was looking for, but first decided - per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931912?sd=zune <--- this website, to allow the battery to run down overnight so that I could recharge it in the morning. As expected, the battery ran down and the Zune turned off over night. So, I try recharging it this morning ... no luck. Nothing changed. When I attempted to turn my Zune on, I'd only get a dark-grey screen with the backlight on.

So, I followed the instructions, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927001/ <--- here, in an attempt to erase all the content on my Zune, and start fresh. Following the steps, everything we just fine. It told me that it was Erasing Content, after which it told me to connect my Zune to the PC. I did this. The computer recognized the Zune, and brought up the Zune software on my computer. The Zune software noted that my Zune was in need of a Firmware update - so I clicked the Accept button so that my Zune could update.

It started updating just fine, but then it reached step 2 - during which I got this Error Message:

"Can't sync because there isn't enough space on your Zune. Delete some items, then try again."

Error Code: C00D124F

I tried this a couple of times on my own, hoping to get a different result. No luck.

Finally, I called Customer Support. I talked to a representative who was nice enough. She asked me to attempt what I had just done previously, a couple more times. I did exactly as she said - and still, no luck. No matter what, whenever I try to update the Firmware, it now tells me that my Zune is full and that I need to delete the contents on my Zune and try again.

Well, I can't access the content on the device (assuming that there is any content on it anyway).

She told me that because we couldn't repair it over the phone, my only option was to send it in and have it replaced with a new one. That's all well and good, of course ... but the catch is - it's out of warranty. I've had this Zune for close to a year and a half to two years now. So, with that in mind, all I have to pay for a replacement Zune 80 is $169.99.

I don't have the money for this - even with two jobs. I have more important expenses - such as food, and gas, and insurance, that absorb my money.

Microsoft's Zune update messed up - and now I have to pay for it. I see this as highly unfair. I did nothing wrong here. I take excellent care of my Zune; it hardly has a scratch on it - and now, I have to pay for an error that is not my own, in order to once again have a operational music device.

I bought this Zune after doing months of research and deciding whether or not I really wanted to spend nearly $300 (after all was said and done) on a device such as this. I weighed my options - between the iPod, the Zune, and several other devices. When I narrowed it down to the Zune, I weighed my options between the different devices that were available at the time. I realized that the 80gig was pretty expensive, but at least it had all of the features I decided I wanted.

I rarely ever make big purchases like this, but when I do, I expect that they'll last me a long time. The last MP3 player that I had lasted me 8-years before it crapped out.

I really hope this can be resolved.... I enjoy my Zune a lot. I listen to it every day. Again, I take excellent care of it ... and yet, when I need Customer Service help for the first time in the life of my Zune - all of a sudden I feel like I'm being ripped off/screwed over.

- A very unhappy customer

~*~

I'm at least happy to know that I'm not the only one who has an issue with this. If this is the case - that Microsoft's update screwed up our Zunes - and the Zunes are out of warranty then perhaps we can get replacements without having to pay for them.

re: Zune 80 - Software update failed, now bricked.

When I read Shadow's post I thought I had gone a few minutes into the future and was reading what I wanted to type.  I'm glad this post explains it so well because I am too mad to type something so nice and patient.  I also updated to the 3.2 update yesterday.  Today my Zune 80 played fine for about an hour, then started not recognizing songs and then went to a screen with a number 5 that said "Contact Customer Support".  I also tried to restart, reboot, and recover the software...all to no avail.  They want me to send it back to them to fix for $160 (warranty expired a few months ago) - for something they caused!  That obviously does not make sense and would be completely unethical of them.  I loved and invested a lot in my Zune and was excited about some of the new things to come...but I need Microsoft to resolve this issue for us before I can continue to support them.

re: Zune 80 - Software update failed, now bricked.
I'm having the same problem with my 120 gigger....luckily its under warranty, but the weird thing is that my 30 gigger is working fine still and i updated them on the same computer last night within minutes of each other. Hopefully this is some stupid program error that will get fixed like last years dilemma with the 30 gig problems with the new year. I will really start getting pissed though if we don't hear from someone on Microsoft's end in the near future. I was also thinking that there may be some weird program problem with the integration of Zune and the 360 update that will be going live shortly. But no matter what the cause, I would refuse to pay for a new Zune thats out of warranty if it was damaged because of a system update. With all the b*tching that has been going on though, I still love my Zunes.

I love my Zune as well - that is why I am so distraught about these issues.  I have read sooo many threads on this very topic, yet no one has any explanation or solution.

If I didn't mention it before but my update also stopped on Step 3.

Microsoft, you out there?

re: Zune 80 - Software update failed, now bricked.
ok i have tried all the alleged solutions that everyone here has also; my 120 is not accepting any music what so ever and i'm really going to try and be patient. if there seems to be no resolution by Monday i guess i'm gonna have to call support.....which i know will frustrate me to no end. i know microsoft monitors these forums so i hope they see a pattern starting to form here before it gets to some mainstream blogs again. once again, something on microsofts end made this happen with whatever updates are being put in place. my 120 was rockin out awesome before last night. at least let us know that you acknowledge this and are working on a way to make it right. my 30 gigger is not comin near my Zune program until its safe.
