Zune is not worth it (especially in Canada)

When you say it does not allow you to purchase from the Marketplace do you mean that the workaround of paying with a US credit card or US xbox live cards doesn't work?  I noticed you can buy a Zune pass card from Bestbuy.com now so the next time I was in the US I was thinking of picking up a bunch to see if I could get it to work with the workaround you just described and the prepaid cards but I won't even attempt it if Microsoft has already closed that door.

I have not tried this so I can't say if it will work or not, but I'd be willing to try it and accept the loss if it doesn't.

Yes, this is the dilemma for some of us; give up all our previous plays and social networking and start with a fresh account just so that we can access a marketplace that is effectively crippled in all respects except podcasts for us.  I have over 65,000 plays logged against my account, and I am loathe to give up all that data for a crippled marketplace that I used to enjoy with version 3 of the software.

 

yeah i'm pretty much agreeing with everyone on this post.

I'm not ready to jump ship just yet, I figure that if there is going to be an change in the Canadian Market the next few months should provide details one way or the other.

Even with the crippled Canadian market, I still prefer the Zune devices to the comparable iPOD devices.

And I really hope you don't believe that Apple doesn't have issues with their devices/software?

Let's not forget we are Canadians, we have other ways to get our content

I totally agree we should have a pay-per-track system without the Zune Pass. Presumably it's the Zune Pass that is not going so well with labels as they think they're going to be losing out on money with the $15/month and get everything deal, as opposed to the traditional "buy everything for at least $1 maybe more, depending on how greedy we're feeling" approach. Unfortunately it seems Microsoft believes the Zune Pass and marketplace are half the Zune franchise and if they can't get it to work than they don't want the Zune device (Zune HD) to be sold here until they get it working. I'm hoping when the video portion reaches Canada later this fall they'll think "good enough" and bring it over here but I doubt it.

I just bought my Zune recently... Although its nice to have another alternative and competitor to the ipod, the Zune lacks astronomically. The fact I cannot get any apps or games on it, really sucks. The plan now is to go on a road trip, and once I'm done, I shall return my Zune, and purchase an ipod touch. There's no point in getting the Alternative when Apple rules the mp3 player world! It's like buying a Cadillac (Zune) over a Rolls Royce (ipod)... Doesn't make much sense...

Actually, if you change the regional settings on your PC to "US" and make a US Live ID account for Zune it will let you see the marketplace and you can download the apps and games. If I could do it without a Zune HD you should be able to get them no problem. Other than music, we should have what the US has by years end unless MS decides to screw us like they did last year. I've been living without the Zune Pass for a long time, but I would really like to try it out for once.
