Hey, new to the social.
When I was in college I listened to alot of stuff from my Christian (Newsboys, Skillet, etc.) to secular (Korn, Metalica, etc.). I love my music and would always say that I was enjoying the tones not the lyrics but every time I went to think of a song it was the lyrics that came to mind not just the instrumental. This made me really look at the thins I allowed into my system with regards to glorifying God. Were the things I exposed my self overwhelmingly leaning towards reflecting the beauty of God or the desires of man?
It is asy to say that all Christian music glorifies god to some extent but I think we forget that some secular works can still show his glory indirectly. A beautiful painting shows Gods glory in indirect ways that we as Christians can observe and hold up to him. A great movie that has an overwhlemingly great message (Glory comes to mind for me) while not Christian can still show us those things which are honerable and worthy of praising God for. So the same an be said with some secular music.
When a secular artist writes a song about loving someone, and not in a get the sex now way, that is noble and a quality we as Christians should rejoice in. I love my wife and a song that reminds me of the love I have for her, no matter from who, is a reflection of what God wants in my life. Even when a secular artist may not intend a song to be specificly for a spouse the idea of that commitment and how the lyrics reflect to me towards God is what matters.
When I looked at my music in college I found very little if anything of value in alot of my secular music. One of the hardest days I had then was when I took out those albums and busted them in the trash.
Phillipians 4:8 8 Finally, brothers,
whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is
pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any
excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these
things.
I believe that when you reflect on these things, wether the gospel is directly given or Jesus is specificly mentioned, you give him honor. Of course don't neglect to mention or reflect on him but there is no harm in delighting in the noble tings of this world because those are directly from God anyways.
