Somehow I knew no matter how I answered there'd be a disagreement - such is the nature of of genres and discussions involving them. No matter how much anyone says *insert band* is Punk there's always somebody going to say *insert band* was Oi.
If you want to put Bad Brains under Punk do it! However, H.R. has been quoted and even on film as saying Bad Brains was Hardcore in the early days... disagree if you may, he was the frontman of Bad Brains so, whatev! But ask somebody else and they may say they were Reggae! I don't doubt at all that they had a profound existence in the DC scene, but Ian McKaye was even considered Hardcore when he was in Minor Threat and he spoke about Bad Brains and their affect on the DC Hardcore scene.
And if there's more to Hardcore than NYHC (Bad Brains isn't from NY and neither is SSD, only two bands were form NY, not sure of your point with the NY comment) which I don't disagree - why didn't you answer your own question by giving your opinion of some Hardcore bands? =) In the end music is always open to interpretation of the listener, NOT the artist. H.R. can say the band is HC all he wants, if you think otherwise - you're entitled.
nuff said, I think this thread just died.
