I think when it's all said and done my favorite album is Metallica (aka The Black Album).  It has the most songs that I really like although my favorite song of all is "Master of Puppets".

Kill'em All and Ride the Lightning... Dave Mustaine still had a heavy influence on these 2 records. Kirk is just playing Dave's music there...

that being said Master and Justice are the last really good Metallica records imho.. I havent listened to much since.

Interesting to note that almost all previous replies to this post listed albums that were pre-The Black Album.  Coincidence?  I think not.

For pure Metallica their best album is Kill Em All you can't get any rawer than that. As far as talent and technicality And Justice for All. Kill Em All is my personal favorite. Songs are hard to pick to list five I would include; Four Horsemen, Dyers Eve, Damage Inc, Fight Fire with Fire and No Remorse. Really hard to pick ask me tommorow and I'll probably say a completely different list.

PS All this Fade To Black CRAP needs to stop what are you people thinking that is not METALLICA as it should be. Sure its kinda cool but for their best song pish.

Album: Ride the Lightning. Epic from start to finish, their most ambitious and creative effort, in my opinion.

Song: Fade to Black. Best song there is.

Objectively my pick for best album is Puppets.  (RTL was my first Tallica record so its a sentimental favorite though haha)

I cannot possibly nail down a best song though, depends on the type of mood I'm in.  Nearly every track off of the first 4 records I dig though.

Album: It's a toss-up between And Justice for All and Master of Puppets. Justice is even more ambitious than Puppets, but the production is awful. I can't pick a best song.

I'm going to have to agree with this guy right here. ...And Justice For All is just a bad ass album title in the first place, and I would say Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, and ...And Justice For All all really jammed good.
