For Ska, definetely The Specials, Reel Big Fish, or Madness.  And for Reggae Bob Marley and all of the Marley kids (especially "Junior Gong") lol.

Ska is kinda the same since reggae came from it they have a lot of the same roots. For some good traditional ska would be Desmond Decker, Toots and Matyls, Prince Buster, Don Drummond, and Jackie Mitto. For 2tone I recommend the Specials, The Toasters, The (English) Beat, Bad Manners, Fishbone and Madness. For 3rd wave I'd go with Mighty Mighty BossTones, Reel Big Fish, Choking Victim, Operation Ivy, and Suicide Machines.

They are totally different sounds. Sure they both use horns and in-your-face bass lines but not the same.

Did anyone say Deals Gone Bad?

I have another post with a ton of ska bands from all waves. go check it for a nice sized list of pure amazing music.

They may sound different but musically they are the same. Guitar played with an upstroke on beats 2 and 4 (the skank or syncopation), walking bass lines that provide the melody (borrowed from jazz), and drums predominately accenting on beats 1 and 3. The only difference musically is the tempo. Reggae is nothing more than ska slowed way down. I know I'm being semantic but, yeah they're the same.

re: gimme some bands...

I have a way of over-sympalizing things, so here's my attempt...

So Cal Style Reggae

Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, Pepper, Long Beach Dub Allstars (and shortbus), Too Rude, Mystic Roots, 311 (sort of), Expendables, OPM

Jamaican Reggae

Marley(s), Burning Spear, Buju Banton, Sizzla, Capelton, Junior Kelly, Gregory Isaacs, Michael Franti & Spearhead (definetely up-and-coming), Half Pint, Cocoa Tea

Matisyahu is amazing to, but I don't know where I would put him. I know not all the bands are So-Cal of Jamaican, but I classified them by using Sublime as the appitamy of So-Cal reggae/ska/punk/whatever, and then compared it to Marley, then I just put all the other bands in based on who I thought they were more similar to. Every band on the list I think is excellent.

BTW, Putamayo is a world music record label and they do world music compilations, I have Reggae Around the World, Latin Reggae and I think another reggae compilation, but they're excellent!

New Amon Amarth song available, check out their myspace!
