Handel's Water Music Suite. I had to play that when I was back in school and remains my favorite. I also like Mendelssohn and DeBussy.

Totally into Early/Renaissance, Medievel and Baroque Music....Palestrina, Machaut, Josquin des Prez, Monteverdi, Bach, Schmelzer, Biber, Corelli.  Love the Baltimore Consort, Academy of Ancient Music and New York Early Music.  The sound of those gut strings on those period instruments is hauntingly beauiful, especially when the pieces are played exactly as they would have been in their time (correct number of instruments, etc.)  Thanks for reading.

re: What classical music do you have on your Zune?
I have some Aaron Copland, Handel, Ravel and a few others.  At one time I had a substantial collection on CD but many did'nt transfer over well from the old TelArc disks that I preferred back then. The music was not compressed which gave it more of a concert hall sound with all of the subtle highs and lows complete with radical volume changes as one might hear in real life. When I got my first computer and began ripping those disks I learned that the tag information wouldnt update automatically and I grew tired of manually entering all of the tag information in so that the songs would be sorted correctly.

Good for you! Although classical music [not just the Classical era] is shunned by quite a few, many would be surprised by just how pervasive it is in our lives from movies to commercial ads.  Personally, I download most of mine from emusic.com.  I pay a monthly fee for a set number of downloads but they do have quite a large selection.  Personally, I like Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Strauss, Mozart, Brahams, Liszt and the list goes on and on because there is quite an array of composers.  There are modern composers that may not be recognized as great composers yet but they will be.  I have quite a number of these on my system but am always finding something new to add.

I don't keep much classical music on my Zune, because I tend to listen on shuffle, and for some unfathomable reason, all classical music seems to be recorded at a much lower level than other music. So, when it's on shuffle, it's just silence and that's not cool.

But when I'm deliberately listening, I'm deeply into John Tavener right now.

“Music, the greatest good that mortals know, And all of heaven we have below.” Joseph Addison (1672-1719)

I have a nice Beethoven album set pressed out in the early 60's on vinyl that I am converting over to CD. I plan to install it on my Zune as soon as it ready. Recently I have been captivated by Gustav Mahler. OMG his music is wonderful, particluarly "Symphony No. 5 in C Sharp Minor: Part III. IV. Adagietto" Conducted by Bruno Walter and The New York Philharmonic Orchestra . I inherited quit a large sum of vinyl records and audiophiles from people who switched to new forms of media, discarding there vinyl records as old fashion and out of vogue. What a shame. There is a lot of gold in vinyl in terms of music. Now that they can be converted to CD, there treasure is heard once again.

I forgot one album when I said what I have earlier, I have Johan de Meij's Symphony No. 1: Lord of the Rings.  It came out quite a while before the movies, I think in the late 80s, and it's some good music.

Things are not as bad as they seem. They are worse than that. They are also better than that.

Too much to list here. A lot of large orchestral and religious works from the Romantic period, especially Berlioz, Liszt, Dvorak and all the late Romantic Russians (Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, etc.). Also about 8 or 10 versions of Mozart's "Requiem". Several albums of J.S. Bach's organ works. Several of Shostakovich's symphonies (especially the Gergiev/Kirov recordings). A few budget collections of J.S Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc. A few a cappella choral collections, most from Robert Shaw led ensembles. A few themed "sampler" collections from labels such as Decca, EMI and Chandos. Overall about 120 albums, many of them multiple disc sets.

As has been said, too much to list here.  Nice to see such a variety of tastes on here, I'm particularly loving the Machaut and completely agree with what was said about the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack. As a proud Brit I feel I should mention Elgar and Vaughan-Williams.  Anyone who hasn't heard Elgar's "Cello Concert in E-Minor" or Vaughan-Williams' "The Lark Ascending", your life will be better for those two pieces.I'm particularly into choral music, I'd like to recommend "Cloudburst" which is a collection of songs by Eric Whitacre stunningly recorded by Polyphony, and Tarik O'Regan's "Voices". Powerful stuff.

I really enjoy Bach's "Little Fugue" and  "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" Other than that I have several compilation cds that I've burned off tracks from a wide variety of composers.  I'm thinking about getting more into Chopin and Liszt.

Live dangerously. . . turn shuffle on!
