I'd have to say that The Gourds rendition of Snoop Dogg's Gin and Juice is pretty awesome if I do say so myself.

My life is going in reverse.

I like Goldfinger's cover of 99 Red Balloons.

Things are not as bad as they seem. They are worse than that. They are also better than that.

Marilyn Manson covering "Sweet Dreams", it's just better, even give the song an entire new direction.

I think its all bull you cant have a cover thats better than the orginal.  If you perfer the new artist of course your going lean towards theirs more but it cant beat out the orginal, but Im in the belief when you cover something you are only playing tribute to a great song.

Widespread Panic covering "Dear Mr. Fantasy"

re: best cover song ever is it possible to out do the original?
I've come across people that just refuse to believe that a cover can be as good or better than the original and I really do like to collect different versions of songs because I have such a wide array of tastes when it comes to music.  Definately one of the stranger albums I've ever come across was a tribute album to AC/DC by some industrial bands called Covered in Black. . . .  just. . .  so weird listening to it.  But Lyle Lovett's version of the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil" is among one of my favorite covers.

Live dangerously. . . turn shuffle on!

The Afghan Whigs version of TLC's Creep is great, any of the songs that the Whigs covered really, but creep stands out.

Twilight Singers version of Bjork's Hyperballad is as good if not a bit better than Bjork's (and I love Bjork)

Travis covering Baby one more time is funny but good

I am sure there are others but those come to mind quickly

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not

It feels good to talk about it out loud.

Sir, I'd hate to agree with you........but I do. I tried listening to the original again, and it didn't do it for me.

My choice for the best cover song is probably even weirder: Cake's cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive". Also, how about some folk love for Jonathan Coulton's cover of Sir Mix-a-lot's "Baby Got Back"? :P

The Beatles' "Blackbird" as played by Jaco Pastorius, Edgar Winters Band's "Frankenstein" played by Marcus Miller, the Police's "Spirits in the Material World" as played by Michael Manring.  "Frankenstein" and "Spirits" are about equal IMO, and I personally like Jaco's version of "Blackbird" better than the original.
