zune working on mac-that market is way too small and definitely not worth the profit for Microsoft to invest the cash in.  Most of us bought the zune before we switched over to Mac.  if we don't figure it out on our own (which there are plenty of resources out there, whether they cost money or not) i am guessing we were written off as a loss anyway to microsoft since we ditched the windows os anyway...

I would prefer microsoft invest in the HD zune or doing something about the obvious car adaptor issue.  I just bought a car today with no tape deck and a freaking built in ipod adapter-boo.  i hate the fm option (they suck!) and i am not going to open up my new cars radio  for an mp3 player.  still  not switching to ipods.

Not worth the profit? that was ridiculous. why cut off a market? isnt some money better than no money?

Plus, in this economic situation, few people have the money to just go blow it on software they'll only use once a week max? I not saying they wont listen to their music more than once a week...
I'm saying its a pain in the ass to switch back and forth between mac and pc even when running on the same system. (I have done it before, i know what i'm talking about) So, why would you want to go back and forth between the two if you can just run the music on a mac? So, the only time they would even use the dual boot is when they want to put music on their zune. So, thats 80 dollars to run the zune software when they are putting music on it. not worth it.

But, anyway...
The ONLY important issue is: why would you spend 80 dollars to run zune software on a mac? 80 dollars to run music software is not worth the investment...
Mac is a growing market. If Zune wants to make any push into the realm of the iPod, they need to take advantage of the evolving marketplace and not cut off half of their potential customers.
And besides, its only software, how hard and expensive is it to make, honestly?

PC users, some of you need to step off your high horse. This isnt about you. This is about us mac users who want the zune software at our fingertips too, or again, in some cases.
Put aside your hate for Macs just because its a Mac. This isnt about what computer is better, what computer is cheaper, what computer has a bigger screen. Its about making an mp3 player we all love and its software compatible for all of us.
This isnt a war of who is bigger and badder and who owns the market.
The fact of the matter is, there is a market. Why not expand to it?

You make some interesting points & also some assumptions... let me comment on what I bolded.
1) No...that is only half of the equation.  It's only worth it if the return (the profit) is significant relative to the investment required.  I have read -but cannot confirm- that the zune software is highly dependent on the .NET framework in Windows (and it is a required component according to the specs)  The issue I read was that recreating this framework for Macs is a very large effort and is the main roadblock to zune software for Mac OS.  Even so, I think MS will eventually get to this... it's just not the next biggest opportunity on their plate currently.
2)  I agree with you, and the zune market among Mac users is no doubt a tiny one.
3)  Same as above.  (I sure wouldn't.)
4) Mac is a growing market, but is still only a fraction of the PC market.  IDC puts their US market share below 10%...and their WW market share is probably in the same range. Yes, it is growing, but not fast enough to catch up anytime soon.
5) Based on 4, you cannot say not serving Mac 'cuts off half of their potential customers.'  iPods have something like 75% of the mp3 market.  If they have 100% sales to every Mac user (which obviously they don't) their PC user market share would still dwarf it, unless the mp3 market size was very small relative to the PC + Mac market.  It is smaller, but not so much smaller to make the math work that way.
6) Software is very hard to make which is why no one can knock off MS operating systems easily, nor Office, and so on...
7) Yes... too many folks make this a personality cult (like Red Sox vs. Yankees here around Boston where I am...)  I think Macs are great...I just prefer my PC for various personal reasons that make sense for me.

So,  I think the issue most strongly holding back Zunes vs. iPods is geography.  You can't catch someone with 75% market share selling world-wide (or close to it) if you sell only in the USA...big as this market may be.

The world wide market share for Apple is ~1.5%.

To me, that would be surprisingly small...even for Apple.  I found another appleinsider article quoting IDC in October claiming 3.2%.  I wonder how they are defining the 'market'...

re: zune for mac????

3.2% seems a bit big. Apple is incredibly small outside of the U.S. If I remember correctly, 3.2% referred to the market share of OS X, which is slanted because the iPod Touch and iPhone report themselves as OS X.

I mean slanted as it does not refer the number of PCs that's Apple has sold, which is unfortunately what many people have tried to derive from it.

Ah...either way, it still supports the point I was making before...

I suggest virtualization software like VM Ware or Virtual Box and just install a virtual PC on your mac for all those apps that don't run on Apple.
