Thanks.  The interface really is a treat...  I'd say go find a store and try it...but there are so many little tricks you discover along the way that 5 minutes playing with one barely scratches the surface.

Are you waiting for higher capacity unit?  If so, I understand.  I'll keep posting on how my experience goes...and I have no doubt other folks will also figure out useful strategies.

Sure thing.  For me it will be a waiting game.  My wife isn't a power user, so I'll probably get her either a Zune HD or the iTouch 16 GB.

My college kid got himself the iPod Touch (3rd gen) and loves it.  From my point of view, the HD radio on the HD is brilliant (I like radio... he doesn't care) and the apps available for the iPod Touch are brilliant at least until the HD catches up.  If portable video is important (from the standpoint of using the HD as a source to an HD TV  -and yes I'm still looking for that old review I mentioned awhile back that upset you so much- the one that compared 720p favorably to 1080i...and it was them, not me...) then the HD beats the Touch.. and so on.

Using one’s spouse as a guinea pig when it comes to technology has its privileges; however, when it comes to her experimental cooking, sadly, I can’t say the same.

I know that most readers and users of Zune are not audiophiles; the same can be said about iTunes too.  But for those few that share the same passion and interests in regards to audio and video technology through this forum, at least there is some saving grace knowing that a handful of individuals do understand and care passionately.

Maybe Zune.net isn’t the appropriate forum to educate users to this level, but judging from the number of views on this forum (over 7,900) within several weeks of this forum’s original posted date, it seems that there are many that share my position.  It’s one thing to be passionate about a thing and passionately wrong.  The latter is one I avoid.

I can guarantee you that if I was an iTouch user; I will be giving Apple hell too.  And if I read any inaccurate information that could potentially steer consumers in the wrong direction, then you bet I will be very vocal about it.

I enjoy very much our debates and I look forward to more whether we agree or disagree.  We’ll see if Microsoft is really passionate about its Zune HD and I’m looking forward to Zune raising the bar a bit more.

P.S.  You should tell your colleagues they need to read this forum more.

New Feature Discovered: Zune HD version 4.0

A while back, I have inquired as to why Zune Playlist can’t be easily populated and detected in Windows Media Player (WMP)and Windows Media Center (WMC).  A user that goes by the name “NSILMike” explained that Zune uses a filename “ZPL” for its playlist which WMP and WMC can’t detect.

I’m happy to announce that as a result of the new Zune HD software version update, Zune users are now able to do so.  Providing that you’ve enabled sharing in Zune, your home network, WMP and with the Xbox 360 Elite, here are the instructions to accomplish this:

1.      On your computer, open Windows Media Player

2.      If you don’t see the classic menu tabs in WMP (File, View, Play, Tools and Help), right-click on the menu bar and click on Show Classic Menus

3.      Click on Tools, Options, and Library

4.      Click on Monitor Folders

5.      Click on Add

6.      An “Add Folder” window will appear

7.      Click on the user name.  (For example, if the name of the computer name is Henry, “Henry” will show as the computer name.)

8.      Click on Music

9.      Click on Zune

10.   Click on Playlists

11.  Then click on OK.

Please note that the term “click” is different from double-click.  Please insure that you follow this instruction carefully.

If you have your Xbox connected to your network, open WMC on the Xbox and insure that Zune Playlist is one of the Add Folder to watch on your watch list.  Depending on your network, it will take several moments for your Zune Playlists to be detected.

Every time you make any changes in Zune’s Playlist, this is mirrored in WMP and WMC.   Before, I had to manually create a separate playlist in WMP and manually add those songs to duplicate what I have in my Zune Playlist.

Enjoy the experience!!!!

Come on guys, your acting a little spoiled.  Your lucky Microsoft put out a 32GB.  That's quite a lot of memory their.  I don't know how you expect to get 120GB into that small device.  If you use everyone of those songs/videos on your player, then maybe you should stick with your Zune 120, after all, it is an amazing product.  If you want something a little less serious and fun to play with, grab the HD.  Otherwise there is no reason to whine about the HD.

The Zune HD 32 GB isn’t sufficient for serious power users.  If you’re happy with either Zune HDs in 16 GB or 32 GB, then that’s your prerogative and preference.

Judging from your statements and conclusions, obviously you haven’t taken the time to read the entire forum; hence, I find your comments to be very interesting and fascinating.

re: ZUNE HD 16 and 32 GB NOW AVAILABLE? ARE YOU SERIOUS?
Seriously, we all know that flash memory is more expensive than having an internal hard drive. The Zune HD is meant to compete with the Touch so they need to keep that price down. There is no way at launch that Microsoft is going to invest money in a 400 dollar price point device. Perhaps in time if the device gets more popular AND the price of SSD goes down we will see higher storage levels.

I don't agree with the power user statement though. 32 GB of music is more than enough, a power user wouldn't go a full day without docking his/her zune anyways. There was a time that I believed I needed my 80 or 120 gig because I would put my fav songs on there and no matter when I would have access to them. In reality I get on tangents rarely and stick with either the new new stuff, or the good ole standbys most of the time. Since I dock my zune every night it is more than easy for me to change up my song selection towards the more likely choices if I need to.

As for the video capacity that falls a little short. It comes down to the two types of power users... the ones who like to do things themselves and pick/ choose a lot of new songs movies with a purpose all the time, and the ones who want convenience of having everything they would ever need on the zune for months at a time. Well, then there are the ones that are too lazy to update anything due to the giant library.

I mean honestly, I have so much crap that I never listen to anymore that I wish i could get payed to sort through my TB hard drive and weed them out, otherwise it's just a huge waste of time.

You’ve made an interesting argument here only in support of one analogy.  The argument you’re making doesn’t support other sides of the equation relative to power users’ audio codec settings, playlists requirements, whole house audio distribution system needs for streaming music, and playlists generated requirements for moods, enviroments, listening styles and preferences, etc., etc., etc.  (I'm just illustrating that, for me personally, a Zune HD 16GB or 32GB won't be sufficient for my needs and requirments.) For example, for the sake of brevity here:

1.       I’m curious as to what  would be your argument regarding audiophiles or power users who rip their CDs using WMA Lossless or other Lossless codes; and for purchased downloaded audio contents  in which their Zune settings are configured for the optimum download settings possible 320 k/bits and more for purchased DRM-free songs?

2.       I’m curious as to what would be your argument regarding audiophiles or power users who have created a large significant number of playlists for different occasions or mood settings requiring to download appropriate music, albums or artists to coincide with their mood swings or environments: Classical, Rock, New Age, Ambient, Holiday/Seasons, R&B, Hip Hop, Pop and particularly those who have a broad horizon of genres and those who are looking to expand their horizons by discovering new artists and new genres offered by Zune Market Place?

The aforementioned is obvious that a 16 GB or a 32 GB Zune HD simply won’t suffice as those capacities may not or won’t be sufficient for serious power users and audiophiles as I have described above.  And, I only touched on music content materials only and not pictures, videos and games.

Since humans utilize three of the five basic senses relative to music that are utilized: seeing, hearing and feeling, the touch cable OLED screen of the Zune HD adds more to those experiences as well.   This is why so many of us feel disenfranchised due to the limitations of a 16GB or 32GB Zune HD.

P.S.  Finally, I had a chance to audition the Zune HD.  This is one awesome device and a serious competition to Apple.  Kudos to the Zune and the Microsoft  team for a remarkable technological achievement.
