How Do I Stop My Playlists from Constantly Refreshing ?
I just downloaded the latest version of the Zune software and now my playlists constantly refresh (the whole list will flash about once a minute), making editing close to impossible. After about the 5th time it refreshes, it will freeze in the sense that my playlist will go from looking like:
  • Song A
  • Song B
  • Song C
  • Song D
To looking like:
  • Song A
  • Song B
  • Song A
  • Song B, etc...
if I try to click on any of the songs, the whole software freezes and I have to restart it. I have tried un and then reinstalling it but it still has the same problem. Anyone else experiencing the same problem or know what to do?

I would select Device in the Zune PC software - and check the Just Added / Removed options - it could be a song it doesn't like syncing and it's constantly retrying it - I have had something similar with Music videos I have converted to work with my Zune

Still does it- it happens with all my playlists regardless if my zune is connected or not.
Thanks though!

I assume they are autoplaylists?  (Static playlists do not refresh...if they are static, it's something else that is going on...)
Try this-
1) shut down the zune software.
2) open up your zune audio folder (if you don't know it, open the software up again and go into settings, collection.  look at the zune audio folder setting right below the monitored folder settings.) and find the \playlists subfolder.
3) drag all your playlists out of that folder and park them on your desktop.
4) Make a new playlist- copy one of your older ones if you can.
If this succeeds, you probably need to re-create all your playlists...  I don't know what happened to them but something got corrupted...

Re: How Do I Stop My Playlists from Constantly Refreshing ?
Orchid... My Zune is doing the exact same thing and it is driving me wild.  Constant refreshing and freezing of  my playlists in the syncing software on my computer, regarless of whether I refresh, restart the software or rebooting the computer.  And the exact same file numbering issue you describe. Double and fake entries for files.   I am often unable to get playlist songs to play.  As far as I am concerned, my playlists are almost unusable.  Do not Microsoft/Zune techs reply to these posted problems? Do they monitor the forums and give aid... they do not leave it to other users to reply to technical issues and obvious bugs like this do they?

Oh thank GOD I'm not alone. Yes, I have all of the described issues too and they didn't start until I upgraded to the latest software. I've combed through most of these posts and they all relate to problems with the auto playlists, but this happens with my standard ones too. I've tried almost everything, nothing has solved it- I know it's a tech bug that Microsoft hasn't figured out exists yet...but in the meantime if I find any hopeful news I'll be sure to pass it along.

re: Re: How Do I Stop My Playlists from Constantly Refreshing ?
1. Un and reinstalling the software (with the 'clean start' option on Microsoft Support)
2. Un and reinstalling my Zune
3. Transferring (to a separate hard drive) and reloading all my music to search for corrupted files (there were none)
4. Transferring my playlists to my desktop and reloading them
5. Searched these forums for something on it
6. Virus scanned my computer and separately scanned the Zune software (nothing found)
and 7. Calling Microsoft tech support this weekend when I have some free time

Any other suggestions? I really don't want to sit on hold for an hour if I do end up calling them. Thanks!

Yes!  Run the media collection reset tool.  this rebuilds a file the software creates and uses to manage your collection.  And...(drum roll here....) it is not replaced when you uninstall and reinstall the software (to preserve things like your podcast subscriptions, local playcounts, etc.)
Find the tool by searching that bold string in the box at the top right of this page.

hmmm... let's see.  You've replaced the software, and now you've replaced the file that keeps all your settings, and keeps track of the collection.  That suggests something else on your PC is causing this problem.  Some sort of application conflict or...?

Yes I was relieved as well Orchid, and I am sure that we are just the tip of the ice berg with this particular Zune software problem.  I will be watching for a fix... perhaps we rattled the cage enough to get someone's attention. lol
