progressive rock forum?
Just wondering how many people out in ZUNELAND like to delve into the music that progressive rock has to offer?  I'm talking about all the subgenres that have popped up throughout the years.  I know I'm obsessed!  Still like other music, just couldn't live without prog.

I wouldn't call myself obsessed but I like Dreem Theatre, Opeth, Agallock, Green Carnation, Fates Warning, Symphony X, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson.

New Amon Amarth song available, check out their myspace!

I'd call myself obsessed; if I'm not listening to prog rock, I'm listening to some sort of jazz fusion, and really, just how different ARE the two genres?

Things are not as bad as they seem. They are worse than that. They are also better than that.

re: progressive rock forum?

I'm definitely obsessed by Prog Rock. Of my 1200 or so CD's I'm estimating more than 2/3 are in the Progressive Genre. Everything from the old standby's (Renaissance, Genesis, Kansas, Floyd, Yes) to the newer bands (Riverside, Porcupine Tree, IQ, Spock's Beard, Flower Kings) and encompassing some of the avant guard (Magma, Univers Zero), Canterbury (Camel, Caravan, Soft Machine), Psychadelic (Ozric Tentacles, Shpongle, Korai Oram, Gong, Steve Hillage) and International (Banco, CAP, Cast, Amarok, Ars Nova, Ain Soph, Kraan, et. al.,) along the way . I have a lot of jazz as well.

I'd be very interested in hearing what others are listening to. I'm always on the lookout for new music.

re: progressive rock forum?

Q- Why do prog rock guitarists play their guitars way up on their chest?

A-So the zipper on their fanny pack doesn't scratch the guitar

Seriously, I have a love/hate relationship with progressive music
It all started with Rush and expanded outwards towards Zappa
My biggest problem is that I got a bit weary of 13 minute guitar solos (excpet zappa's) so I went the other way and started going for more experimental stuff like Einsturzende Neubauten
Then a friend turned me on to Buckethead and Foetus as well as a ton of Japanese bands like Melt Banana and The Boredoms

Since then, I have branched out into more theoretical viewpoints but not the ones that have time signatures and dense chord structures
I am more interested in things like chance operations and chaotic noise sculpture, John Cage and Pierre Shaeffer

My newest tangent is Krautrock which is full of long progressive minded jams so I might swing back to the regular prog for a while

Rush has a lot of 7+ minutes songs...but don't know of any 13 minute long guitar solos by Alex Lifeson. I'm not into Zappa..so don't know about him. I actually think guitarists like Clapton, Santana, Jeff Beck have long guitar solos or just plain major portion of a song....on a studio recording this is not so much as live on stage.....I mean look at the Grateful Dead....20 minute songs. R&B artists are famous for long, live jam sessions on stage. I've seen Prince in concert and he will take a 6 min CD song and turn it into a 15 min jam with most of it guitar stuff, same with Santana.

I don't have a problem with it at all. As far as the high guitar style playing....don't understand that...some of the bands are older and yes they have a "beer gut" which forces them to hold the guitar up on their belly. Prog bands would not fall under the fanny pack group.....that would be more like the Grateful Dead, Skynard, 38 Special, Tom Petty or Springsteen...

I doubt Rush or Kings X would sport a fanny pack.

To each his own though......Rock on!!

And BTW Fripps.......I'm all for a Prog/Rock Forum

re: progressive rock forum?

Not only do we need a prog. rock forum, but someone needs to put together a sample prog. rock playlist that could be purchased, as is done with so many other types of music.

At the tender age of 52 I just discovered Porcupine Tree, would like to sample music like it.

Check out www.progarchives.com You can sample tons of different prog music and they do a good job of reviewing new and old albums.

Check out artists Pantommind, Quidam, Riverside, Manning and Mind Key (these guys are good)....

re: progressive rock forum?

Maybe.....I think a lot of people feel Coheed & Cambria is more EMO than PROG.......I might call them PROGMETAL, versus straight up PROGROCK, they are harder than Rush, Yes and Tiles.

I would put them with Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Mind Key, Kings X and Pantommind.
